Don't you agree that there is just something different about Asia that makes it more memorable? The days just stand out more. I lived in rural coastal Japan for two years and never tired of the feel of the place. It all feels weirdly familiar and weirdly different at the same time. I also think you find a different breed of traveler in Asia than in Europe. Like these guys that do these trip reports from Cambodia just get it.

Look up Shikoku Henro. That's my dream. I have a buddy that's already committed to doing it with me, but it's still like 7/8 years down the road and I'm getting antsy.

As I asked the OP, some added details would be helpful:

How long of a trip?
Flying or driving? If flying, does that budget include airfare?
What do you like to do?
Do you have your passports?

Plenty of time to do somewhere in Europe, but the flights would likely be more than $500 RT.

St. Lucia would be a good option if you just want to relax on the beach.

If you're more into exploring other cultures, Mexico City would be a good option, or if you want to enjoy some cooler weather in October then maybe Montreal?

The only hangup is keeping the flights at $500 or less. I would absolutely set alerts for different places and keep an eye out for flight deals. Or go to our local flight wizard CuseTiger.

Personally I wouldn't do Europe for a week. You're pretty much limited to one or maybe two cities as there is so much to see and do. Also, I don't do jetlag well and with most flights to Europe being overnight the first day is mostly a waste.

For a week and for the airline ticket budget and for a honeymoon the Caribbean makes a lot of sense.

I like a week in one single European city. A week in London with a direct flight from NOLA gets you into central London around 2 pm. Plenty enough time to enjoy your first day, do some sightseeing, have a great dinner, and hit a pub to stave off jetlag.

I'm not sure why so many ppl are hung up on "tropical escape" as the ideal honeymoon. Island paradises can be boring as hell if you're not a diver, aren't into lying on the beach or pool, and are into food/drink. I'll take a city destination any day over middle-of-nowhere....but to each his own.

Yeah that’s what I meant when I said Europe. One place, not hopping all over.

I agree with you about beach destinations. Our honeymoon had a good mix. We were gone two weeks and had maybe 4 days total on a beach villa. The rest was exploring. I get bored at the beach.

I can agree with one city in Europe for a week. I'd love to do Madrid that way.

Islands? I explore. The last thing I do on an island is lay on a beach. Every island has a wet side and a dry side and many have active or dormant volcanoes, miles of trails, diverse wildlife and distinct cultures.

Ya I was on a tiny island (Ko Yao Noi) for part of my honeymoon. I read there was a secret beach so I rented a scooter and set off to find it. Had to follow written directions and just look at my digital Google map to guess I was going the right way. Saw parts of the island most don't and it was a cool adventure.

My wife stayed at the beach/Villa

I kind of agree, as for us we decided it would be a waste to spend 10 days laying on the beach and doing pretty canned activities. There is a lot to see out there, and we prioritize that first and foremost. When everyone was getting married at 24-25, I think the tropics for a week makes more sense. But if a little older, you probably find it easier to do that as a long weekend trip, and less easier to get 2 weeks to go explore new places.

I do disagree about the cities only thing, because some of my favorite European days have been spent in smaller areas.

I also disagree with most everyone about the idea that a week means you can only see one or two places max in Europe. Knocking out jetlag is pretty easy for me, so that helps. But I'd much rather spend 2-3 days and see more places now, when I'm able to do it, so that I have a better sense of where I might want to spend a week in the future. We won't be able to take multiple flights and train trips in a 2 week span as easily with kids or when we're older.

Plus, airports and train stations and taxis are part of "traveling" to me. While like most people I don't find them interesting domestically, I find them very interesting and a significant part of the journey when abroad.

So by your math, if they have a week and spend 2-3 days in each place, that would be three places at the absolute max, but more likely two places. That's pretty much what we were saying.

If you say so. Sometimes a single day will be plenty. It depends on the person, the location and their interests.

The point is that every time this comes up there is a Rick Steves-like tendency to lecture the new international traveler going abroad for the first time to only do a couple of cities (if that) over their 7 or 10 day trip. The reasons posters give for this are very valid considerations, but it's a one size fits all approach to travel from people who travel frequently to people who don't, and who may not in the future.

Well now you're just changing the goalposts and saying 1 day.

Also, I'm assuming when he says a week trip, that includes the flights to and from their destination. So that would realistically give you 5-5 1/2 days of actual vacation.

Serious question though, who is Rick Steves?

Getting married a month prior but:

Going to London for 3 days(shes a fashion major whos never been out of the country) than Prague, than Bratislava, and finishing off at Budapest. Since we're going in dec we'll be stopping at some Christmas markets and bs things like that. We got round trip and 11 nights hotel for under $1,800.

I'm really not, I'm using a more extreme example to make a point.

Rick Steves is a valuable travel website/forum. Lots of good info, but it's kind of groupthink, like a lot of travel-centric forums.
