Hawaii requires strict compliance with testing to be admitted to the state and each island can have additional requirements so you will want to confirm each island's requirements. Start at this website to get registered and input your travel itinerary. LINK Once you complete the registration and upload the negative test you will be emailed a QR Code that you use upon arrival to avoid the 10 day quarantine.

You must have the following:
1) test within 72 hours of departure (the last leg to Hawaii)
2) test is from from a Trusted Testing and Travel Partner
3) you must have the correct type of test; and
4) the results must have been received and uploaded to the Hawaii safe travel site prior to boarding.

quote:

All travelers must have a negative test result BEFORE beginning the final leg of their trip. Anyone without a negative test result PRIOR to departure must quarantine upon arrival.

This means for example if you are connecting through another city for a direct flight to Hawaii you must have your negative results uploaded to the Hawaii website before the last flight from the mainland. An example is connecting though DFW you have to get the correct test within 72 hours of the flight from DFW to Hawaii and have it uploaded to that site before the flight leaves DFW not when your first leaves to DFW.

quote:

The state of Hawai‘i will ONLY accept Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) from a certified Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) lab test results from TRUSTED TESTING AND TRAVEL PARTNERS.

You can't just get a test from your local physician or testing site. It must be from a trusted partner. Walgreens and CVS are trusted partners but not all of the tests they offer are acceptable and not all stores do the testing. Your airline can also offer testing through various airline partners that offer mail in testing LINK to list of trusted travel testing partners

I used Walgreens and did the Rapid Diagnostic Test -ID NOW test. It was free and we got results within 2-3 hours. You do the nasal swabbing yourself in your car at the drive through. Very easy and painless. I know others who did the mail in tests for over $100 and did not get results in time due to weather and shipping issues. Be sure to request the correct test LINK to Walgreens testing locations
The test results from Walgreens will be emailed to you. Within 24 hours of departure you have to go to the https://travel.hawaii.gov/#/ and login to upload the negative results PDF from the email.

Additional things to be aware of:

Masks are required in all public spaces, in stores and while walking to pools or beaches. You do not have to wear a mask once seated at the pool or beach. You will definitely encounter mask Nazis so be prepared for it if you forget to put it on. You will be reminded constantly in the airport.

If you are traveling inter-island you will need another test before departing for the other island. Each one is a little different:

quote:

A partial inter-county travel 10-day quarantine requirement applies to all persons traveling to and between the islands of Kaua‘i, Maui, and the island of Hawai‘i. It does not include inter-county travelers arriving on O‘ahu. It also does not apply to trans-Pacific travelers connecting through Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on O‘ahu

Maui-
quote:

All inter-island travelers coming in from outside of Maui County must provide a pre-departure test 72 hours prior to departing for Maui County to be exempt from quarantine.

Kauai -
quote:

The counties of Kaua‘i, Maui, and the island of Hawai‘i are each managing their own inter-county travel quarantine processes. Travelers to Kaua‘i must receive a negative pre-travel test result before departure and a 2nd negative test result after 72 at an approved Enhanced Movement Quarantine (EMQ) “resort bubble” property. Visit https://www.kauai.gov/COVID-19 for details and a list of approved Enhanced Movement Quarantine locations.

Don't count on just rolling up to a CVS or Walgreens in Hawaii to do the testing. Research testing locations before arrival and have a game plan.

Most airlines have suspended meals and alcohol sales on flights from the US. Prepare accordingly. American gives you a snack box with nuts, dried cranberries, a cookie and wheat thins. We also got one cold drink.

Tours are operating at about 50% and we were often reminded to book or reserve your spot due to reduced capacity.

Thanks for the helpful post. Hoping these will ease up, especially in Kauai. Which islands are you planning on visiting?

We had reservations for May (Maui) and cancelled last month. I'm not putting my family through all that bullshite just so they can take my tourist dollars. I hope their economy can survive off Coffee and avocados.

Yep. Screw Hawaii. They'll soon be begging Slow Joe for bailout money.

We had a June 2020 Maui trip cancelled so we rebooked recently for end of May/early June.

I was not wanting to go there due to all these restrictions but the airlines are forcing us to use our credits on flights to and from Maui so we were stuck.

And the airlines screw you even more on the credit. It’s a use it one time and it’s all gone. For example, we had $1100 with Delta and $1000 with United as our original trip was 2 one way flights. When we rebooked, our flights were cheaper than the credits we had but we didn’t get a balance for the difference. The credit was all gone.

We just got back from Maui and it was a fantastic trip. We were worried about the Covid testing but it was a breeze. We went to Walgreens on Sunday. The girl passed us 4 swabs through the window and walked away. We each inserted the swab less than a half inch up our nose and sent it back. Two hours later we had all our negative results. We werent charged for the test. I'm not sure if insurance paid for it, or if it subsidized by the state, or if the people at WG are too dumb to know whether or not to charge but it didn't cost us a penny.

We were emailed the test results which we loaded up to HI Safe Travels website and breezed through all the airport check points.

I also recently returned from Maui and the biggest hassle was the 7 hours with a mask on. The flights to and from Hawaii were only half full and we were able to stretch on on the empty seats. The beach and hotels were not crowded.

If you plan ahead it will not be bad. The testing and uploading of results was surprisingly easy. My intent of this post was to give readers an idea of what it takes to get past the testing and a starting point to plan testing. If you follow the instructions you will be fine. It takes a lot more planning just to get meals and rides at Disney!

By this summer probably half of this will change, they are moving to phase 3 soon which opens up a few more things and allows more people in an area.

Hell I'm prepared for mask to be part of our daily life moving forward anywhere in public

How long did it take to get the confirmation email from Walgreen's for your testing appointment?

We had to do 4 separate appointments b/c 2 kids over the age of 5. I got one confirmation right away. The others trickled in over a few hours.

I just did mine and my bride's. the testing time was confirmed within minutes. Once we got the first testing appointment, we called to confirm because of the concern of the close window. The second test was 15 minutes later. The lady at Walgreens said they could test multiple people in the same car as long as they knew ahead of time. We did both tests at the same time and they were expecting us. I would call ahead once you get the first scheduled to make sure they could handle multiples in the same vehicle.

Go enjoy Hawaii at 50% occupancy

Yep. We were going to go again, having loved the first trip (and it was all Oahu), but if we're going to go through all that, we're going to go to Ireland next time.

You can do the spit test from home and get the fast pass if you fly Hawaiian or Alaska

You dont deal with any of the airport screening
