Backstory: Daughter and best friend had planned a car camping trip with a heading of west. They’ve been following some car campers’ journeys and wanted to try it themselves.

Best friend backed out so my daughter was pretty bummed. I told her, “shite, I’ll go!” Then the real planning started. This is my youngest daughter’s last semester and I’m hoping we make some great memories on this trip before she moves out and tries to make her claim in this world.

She’s a scheduler and the itinerary maker. I told her to to keep the itinerary “loose” because “you never know what the weather is going to do.”

Reading her notes, we’ll spend the night in/around Austin Friday (she needs boots so we’re stopping at REI). Then on to Big Bend to camp.

Next up is driving to GCNP with a few stops along the way. I think this is a two day drive according to schedule. We had to reroute to the south rim because the north is closed for winter.

Then it’s on to Zion, followed by Bryce and/or Arches. She’s got spots reserved for primitive+ camping where needed.

Plans as of now is to hit Mesa Verde before checking out Palo Duro again and then heading home.

I am an avid camper so while she is sleeping in the truck, I’ll be tied off to two trees in my hammock or a tree and the truck. I am so fricking excited to be headed out again!

We’ll see how much we can fit in the ten days of travel. Wish us luck and photos to come (not of daughter).

Have you seen the weather forecast? It's going to be 12 degrees at big bend on Sunday night. I'm sure GC and Zion will be colder.

I’m geared for the cold. I’m not worried at all but thanks for the concern.

Have fun! I'm willing to bet she'll learn to break in boots before a big trip after this one... but she'll have great experience to fall back on for the next trip!

Probably so. I tried to take her a few weeks ago, but she’s been super busy with work and school. We shall see.

I bought some vasques the week before our thanksgiving trip to Hot Springs and didn’t have a problem at all with break in. I hope she has the same luck.

It depends on the boots in my experience, there are some pairs of boots that don't have much break-in time. On the flip side, those might not last as long or might leave her more prone to injury if she decides to move somewhere after college where she can hike every weekend. And it'll also depend of course on how intense yall will be hiking.

Any plans for hikes/campsites? Those are some amazing areas. Highly recommend Kolob Canyon in Zion for sunset.

Appreciate the suggestion. This is her trip and I’m along for the ride (I’ll actually be doing most of the driving ). I’m not sure what trails she has planned but I’ll relay the info to her for sure. She informed me this evening that we’ll be in Zion for two nights.

FYI, most of the NP’s have a 3 month reservation window so we may not get to camp IN the park because she made the reservations too late. Live and learn. She’s booked a lot of KOA’s as back up if they don’t let us stay in the parks, themselves.

Poor timing its going to be muddy, icy, cold and wet all at the same time. Horrible time of year for Bryce. Bring your credit card as this will turn into a hotel clamping trip. Sorry

KOAs are awesome! That's what we always do when we go to Glacier. We stay in the KOA 5 minutes from the park entrance. Doesn't take away from our experience at all, and spares us the headache of having to worry about trying to get one of those super in demand NP camping spots.

What is car camping... just sleeping in your car? Is that at all comfortable?

Anyways, I think it's great you are doing this with your daughter. I hope you all have a great time. Will be cold but you know that obviously.

Yeah, somewhat. It basically means driving to a spot and camping. She has an air mattress for the back seat for her and her dog. I’ll be sleeping outside in the elements when able (not pouring rain). All I need is one tree to tie my hammock to. And Walmart allows you to “boondock” for one night, if needed.

If conditions don’t allow me to set up dry, I can sleep in the front seat. I have the ability to fall asleep virtually anywhere and in any position. It’s not the best sleep but I get my winks in.

We’re taking our time to kind of get to know each other again. She was a kid when she left for college. So getting “there” isn’t the highest priority. I appreciate the concern from everyone.
