12 of us are going in a couple of weeks and we are trying to figure out our logistics?

What is Louisville's public transit like?

Scooters/Rental Bikes?

Difficulties finding rideshares?

Any information including do's and don't's for the event is appreciated.

Do you have grandstand tickets or will you be in the infield?

Infield. Not high rollers yet.

ETA: We have a limo quote at $300 a person for 8 hours, but I'd rather not do that if there are reasonable alternatives.

I enjoy visiting Louisville but it's not Vegas or Disney. The downtown is a bit gritty (not awful) and Churchill Downs is in the hood.

Get a hot brown at the brown hotel.

They do have scooters in a limited area downtown, I don't think they make it to the downs. You probably don't want to ride them to the downs anyway.

Went in 2020 when only 75% tickets were sold and it was all inclusive for that one year (all drinks and food included for grandstands atleast). luckily we knew a local that helped out with rides cause ubers were a long wait. Get tickets for distilleries way before if you can. We snagged some last minute tickets to Old Forester in downtown Louisville and it was really cool. Also, went to the fillies and lillies party on Friday night which was really cool food/music/raffles/bar/giveaway party inside of Kentucky downs.

They serve the lily and mint juleps in specialty glassware every year. If you like souvenirs they will run out of glasses by Saturday so stock up on Friday.

This may have had to do with peak covid lockdowns though, no?

I’ve been twice — infield both times. Unfortunately, I will be of no help except for rideshare — easy the night before if you are doing Bardstown bars, but we walked to/from Cardinal Stadium when doing rideshare day of.

It definitely could've been the issue.

So the issue is you just have to get out of the hustle and bustle around the track to grab one? How long did it take for a driver to accept your request?

ETA: A poster above said the neighborhood is a little sketch, but you walked from the track to the stadium. Didn't bother you?

I can 2nd the neighborhood is sketch, but plenty of people selling spots in their yard or empty house lots within a few blocks of the front gate if you decide to rent a car.

We got to and from there on a charter bus. I'd try to find a setup like that.

Half the fun is learning how to read a racing form and placing some small bets on box exactas or win/show/place. Gives you something to cheer for in each race.

Try not to get too toasty. It's a long day, and the big race is at the end.

Private charter or something more like a shuttle?

It was a charter as part of our package. Drop off and pickup.

But as for non-package options, there HAS to be some type of infrastructure that exists for this kind of service.
They do this every year. And this is a known issue.
Everyone is right. The area was sketchy and packed.

Been a few times. I’ve much more enjoyed house parties on derby day and making out to the downs for the days leading up to it. Entirely too fake for me on derby day.

Has been a few years since I’ve been but used to be an annual event when I had a couple friends lived in Louisville. He lived in the St. Matthew’s area which is a nice place to go out if you get an air bnb there. Uber or cab is not long from there if you get down early enough in the morning and don’t get stuck in the heavy traffic. We got dropped off at UofL football stadium and walked over also not a long walk.

Timing depends. Most of the crowd empties out after the Derby, but there are still a couple races that you can use as an excuse to wait out the crowd. Too difficult to beat the crowd, honestly, but I never had issue getting an Uber.

Neighborhood isn’t terrific, but you aren’t going down a side street to get to the Stadium. It’s pretty wide-open.

Been for Breeders Cup so I cant offer Derby Day advice. I can tell you the neighborhood isnt great but like others had said the walk to/from Cardinal Stadium will be fine. Cant imagine how crowded that place gets for Derby as it was a bit too crowded for the BC which was like 1/2 the ppl. Louisville is one of my underrated cities if you like bourbon. Going to bar and having an educated bartender pour you something you cant easily buy elsewhere is great. Watched Bama smoke LSU there after BC in 2018, bourbon scene made it tolerable to watch.

You can definitely scooter or bike down there on race day. The track is basically right outside of downtown. Maybe 3-4 miles from downtown.
