Wife and I are more than likely headed to Lake Como this coming Summer. We are planning on staying in Bellagio and visiting Varenna, Menaggio, and then heading to Lugano, Lucerne. Does anyone have any recommendations or advice for the area?

We were there this spring for 6 days. Loved it. We stayed in Varenna, at the Hotel Royal Victoria. Incredible view of the lake from the balcony. The ferry is easy to use. We did have a private boat tour of the lake that we throughly enjoyed. We would go do day trips to different towns on the and enjoy each of them. Varenna is a little smaller and quieter than Bellagio but you can’t go wrong with either. They are centrally located do travel is easy. The nice thing about Varenna is the train stops there so it easy. I would also recommend seeing Milano including the Last Supper” painting. Milano is a great city to visit.

We visited Milan a few years ago and did a day trip to Stresa and I fell in love with the lakes hence why we're going back. I'll look into staying in Varenna. I initially was thinking about bellagio b/c of the larger amount of choices for lodging.

Yes.
I have been to that area twice.

We used Lugano as our base for the lake region. There was a thread about Lugano on here last week.
We spent a few hours in Mennagio. It is a quaint little town with friendly people. We were there on a Sunday when first communion day for the kids was going on in the cathedral and the outdoor market was in full swing. The lakefront scenery was pretty with Bellagio across the way.

I have been to Lucerne twice. It is a walkable town with beautiful lakefront scenery and views of the snow capped mountains in the distance. There are two churches that are must sees, the cathedral and especially the Baroque style Jesuits church.
Do your jewelry and watch shopping at the big Bucherer’s store at the foot of the wooden bridge.
An atmospheric and historic restaurant is the Old Swiss House by the Lion Monument.

We were going to use Lugano for our home base for the second part of our trip. Still recommend or should we use Lurcerne?

Lucerne is a great place to visit but it is not a base for the lake region because it is too far away.
Lugano is a convenient base for the lake region. Lake Lugano is the next lake over from Lake Como.
If you are staying in Bellagio, that is probably better. I have never stayed in Bellagio but I have friends who love the Hotel Florence in Bellagio.

I am not sure that Lucerne is a good base to explore other areas. A better choice near there may be Interlaken.

My post in a very recent thread about this area:

I spent a week in Bellagio this summer and 3 nights in Varrena several years ago. I would go back to either tomorrow but would stay in Bellagio and visit Varrena.

I have not made it up to Lugano.

If staying in Milan for a night or two, see a performance at La Scala.
