Gulf near Tampa

I grew up in Central Florida and lived in Tampa for 3 years. You got some great advice, however, I'd add the question: "what for"?

North of Tampa the beaches may not be as polished as Siesta Key or Anna Maria Island, but the Crystal River/Homosassa area offers more variety—fishing, scalloping, kayaking, manatees, and snorkeling in the springs.

South of Tampa is probably better for a traditional Gulf vacation with white-sand beaches, restaurants, shopping, and more of a resort feel. St. Pete Beach and Fort De Soto also add strong options closer to Tampa, especially if you want a good beach without going as far south as Sarasota.

My personal ranking would be:
Anna Maria Island — best relaxed Gulf vacation
Lido Key/Sarasota — best overall variety
Siesta Key — best beach
St. Pete Beach — best combination of beach, restaurants, and convenience
Fort De Soto — best natural beach and outdoor setting near Tampa
Dunedin/Caladesi — best northern beach alternative
Crystal River/Homosassa — best nature and outdoor-activity trip

So for beaches, dining, and a more traditional vacation, I’d lean south or toward St. Pete. For fishing, scalloping, springs, snorkeling, and a more outdoors-focused trip, I’d lean north.
