I’m looking at taking a family trip to the Grand Canyon area for Mardi Gras this year and need some recommendations. What I have so far is flying into vegas and staying there for 2 nights then venturing out for 6 nights.

Should I get an RV or rental car and hotels?

How long at the Grand Canyon?

Any legit rafting within a reasonable drive?

Looking to stay busy most of the time

I have visited the Grand Canyon from both Las Vegas and from Sedona via Phoenix. Cant really go wrong if you plan it out right. Personally, I think one day is enough at the South and/or North Rim. If you stay in the park you can catch both sunrise and sunset as it is really amazing how much it changes as the sun passes over throughout the day.

Las Vegas
Vegas 2 nights
Grand Canyon South Rim 1 night (1 night Park or hotel in Tusayan)
Grand Canyon North Rim 1 night (if park is open) (Stay in Jacob Lake Inn)
Springdale 3 nights (visit Bryce Canyon and Zion etc..)
Vegas 1 night (about a 775 mile trip)

*you could also work in a day at Flagstaff at the expense of a night at another location with a bit more car time (about a 850 mile trip)

From Phoenix/Old Scottsdale (2 days) to Sedona (4 days) to Flagstaff (1 day) to GC (1 day) and back is a great option as well. (about a 500 mile trip)

We are planning a family trip for spring break. This is my (7-night) itinerary, if it helps --

Day 1: Fly into Vegas (arrive before 9 AM). Valley of Fire, Lake Mead, then stay in Hoover Dam area.
Day 2: Hoover Dam tour early. Drive to Sedona via Jerome / Cottonwood.
Day 3: Sedona
Day 4: Sedona
Day 5: Through Flagstaff to enter Grand Canyon at East Entrance. Drive rim to South Rim. Stay at El Tovar.
Day 6: Leave Grand Canyon for Red Rock. Check into Vegas hotel.
Day 7: Vegas
Day 8: Fly home

I've got this basic itinerary and hotel reservations at the Grand Canyon and in Vegas, but haven't dug into other activities yet. Looking into water activities on Lake Mead is definitely on the list, but I think the water's been really low?

The drive from South Rim to southern Utah/Zion area back to Vegas is very unique and beautiful in a way only a desert can be!

We were in Sedona recently, try to get reservations at Mariposa. Outstanding.

You suggest driving to Vegas this way from the Grand Canyon instead, skipping Red Rock?

A long day driving, but I've never been to that area so am up for it if it's worthwhile. I could also consider cutting Sedona shorter to make time for actually going into Zion and breaking that drive up into 2 days.
