Had a trip booked next week from Aug 25th thru Sept 1st but am closely monitoring the fire there. Concerned with the air quality and my 5 month old since it is in in-healthy status as of right now.

My emergency plan will be in North Yellowstone. Trying to make a decision by tomorrow or Wed. morning if air quality is still bad. Anyone familiar with the area? Looking for a cabin and maybe doing some fly fishing up in that area.

Yes probably Gardiner MT. Driving from North Dakota so somewhere on the north or northeast side will be best for me.

That whole area is very beautiful, I'll be there the first week of September. Probably a little early but I'm hoping to hear some elk bugling and color changes.

The areas outside of the parks are very nice too. I haven't looked at the fires there but I wouldn't mess around with them. Those big fires you can smell from miles and miles away. I was simply saying though that southern montana outside of the parks is very nice area too.

We were in Glacier last summer when the Sprague fire got really big. The smoke wasn't too bad, and if you read the weather reports for the fire daily, they do a good job letting you know which areas will be impacted.

For instance, Two Medicine had no effects.

as the others have said that whole area is stunning.
when i was researching my yellowstone trip i came across tons of ranches & outfitters in the areas north of the park entrance, there's all kinds of options

also you could look into going into the park and staying at mammoth hot springs (N entrance from gardiner) or canyon village from the NE entrance. theres a closer junction area than canyon (tower) but its all torn up for construction. canyon village is awesome

Everywhere in the Rockies has smoke from California fires. I am in downtown Denver and cant see the mountains from my office due to it right now. We were in GNP a couple weeks ago and it was smoky. We left the day the fires started and went to Yellowstone and it is also smoky. If you are worried about air quality maybe head east.

Even with the smoke and limited visibility the parks are awesome. I think GNP has most of the west side closed though so I would perhaps wait to go.

Only worried about air quality since I'm bringing my 5mth old daughter along. If it was just me and the wife it wouldn't be an issue.

Yellowstone the quality of the air shows moderate where in GNP it shows unhealthy to very unhealthy. Still waiting a day or so to make a final decision.

Would rather not cancel my GNP trip since I've been planning this out for a while now.

Fires Map

Glacier is so much nicer than Yellowstone, so if you can pull if off then do it. The east side looks more accessible.

However, this is a concern with or without wildfires:

She will only be doing the smaller day hikes and riding in a harness on me or the wife.

If we do longer day hikes, we have granny to watch her back at the cabin.

Glacier is much more impressive park. And as others have said, this whole region is smokey.

Go to Glacier

I don’t know about Glacier being better than Yellowstone. They’re different places with different things to see both are fantastic!

Half of Glacier is closed. Everything west of Logan Pass is closed. You can’t do the Highline Trail, see Bird Woman’s falls, Weeping Wall, Heavens Peak, Garden Wall, Avalanche Lake, and others.....do Glacier next year. If you do end up going and go to the west side I can’t recommend Belton Chalet highly enough. Great local beers for $4 each and terrific upscale food. We ate there twice in the 5 days we were there.

Fire Update

Looks like it has increased a few thousand acres over night. Going to make a decision tonight or tomorrow morning. Not looking good for the west side since most of it is shut down.

Eh it's different. The geothermal features of Yellowstone are pretty damn awesome.

Both suffer from overcrowding though

Just got back from Glacier 2 weeks ago. Was absolutely amazing (minus seeing a 15 year old kid fall to his death on the GTTSR)but it was packed as to be expected. We however waited until about 1700 to do the entire Highline Trail to Loop Parking lot and we only saw about 10 people and most of them were in the first 5 miles.
Hate seeing what the fires have been doing since then.
Went to Yellowstone last year and it is also amazing and beautiful.
Two different parks for sure, and I don't think you can go wrong either way.
Enjoy your time in Big Sky country!

Kid got out of the car and climbed down into the top of a creek that drops sharply over 100 feet. He tried to take a selfie, slipped and swan dived to his death. His mom slid down on her butt down the drop from a side angle to be with him. Wasn't pretty.
There will be more though. Falls kill way more people there than wildlife.
Just stay aware and don't do dumb shite.
