If you go to munich, be sure to take a daytrip train ride over to Salzburg, Austria. Beautiful town wit a good Christmas market.
We took the train in December from Munich and stayed there 3 nights. Got to fill a bucket list item seeing Krampusnacht! No words can explain this scene. What a hoot.

Nürnberg is really popular. It is the home of lebkuchen and the bread for the bratwurst is really good, like the old reising pistolettes.
Here is a good article to have your browser translate with a bunch of suggestions around Munich.
If you come in one calendar month for long enough and your group is small, get a deutschlandticket and you can go anywhere on the local trains, even to Salzburg.

Wife and I did these in Vienna and it was awesome. I highly recommend.

Munich: go to the Mittelaltermarkt (Middle Ages themed Christmas market, really cool), the Residenzmarkt, Viktualienmarkt, and Muenchener Freiheit market. Avoid Marienplatz as overly touristy and expensive.
Vienna: St. Stephen's and Schloss Belvedere. Vienna City Hall has a huge one along with ice skating and a ferris wheel for incredible views.

Christmas markets are awesome...but they do get redundant after seeing one or two
Here would be my order from best to worst of the ones I have been to:
Salzburg
Rothenburg
Bolzano
Munich
Garmisch Partenkirchen
Florence
Paris

Going to Munich - Salzburg - Vienna over Christmas.
Hotel selection is not ideal this close to the trip. Has anyone here stayed in a VRBO/AirBNB in Munich or Vienna that they liked.
Obviously looking for a safe area that is close to the things we would want to see, as we teenagers coming with us.
TIA!
