Munich and Vienna Restaurant Recs Needed
Posted by bigern19 on 10/3/25 at 2:06 pm
Going to be in Germany and Austria over the holidays, including Munich on Christmas Day. Any recomendations on restaurants for a Christmas meal in Munich and for other days both there and in Vienna?
TIA
TIA
Going to Munich - Salzburg - Vienna over Christmas.
Hotel selection is not ideal this close to the trip. Has anyone here stayed in a VRBO/AirBNB in Munich or Vienna that they liked.
Obviously looking for a safe area that is close to the things we would want to see, as we teenagers coming with us.
TIA!

Thanks, I’ll look into those things. With teenagers the Viking cruise doesn’t work, but sounds like a great way to se those spots otherwise.

That sounds right up our alley. Anything we can miss in Prague or Vienna? Or something that isn’t worth the time? Ty!
European Christmas - where should we go?
Posted by bigern19 on 7/17/25 at 2:38 pm
Looking at taking the family to Europe over the Christmas holidays. We have two teenage girls and have been to London, Paris, Rome, Florence, but not opposed to doing London or Paris again and tying it in with another location. Some places we've thrown out there besides those above are Barcelona, Prague, Vienna, but really don't know and are looking for general ideas to get started with planning.
Also, we not opposed to leaving Christmas day because we go to mass and celebrate with family on Christmas Eve. Just want to enjoy some of the Christmas festivities and do all of the normal food/art/history stuff.
TIA for any recomendations!

Treadmill/weights at home or gym membership...wwyd?
Posted by bigern19 on 2/13/25 at 11:31 am
Debating on which direction to take:
- Invest in a treadmill and weights to use at home
- Join a gym
The gym scene isn't really something I love, and the covenience of being able to work out when I can is alluring, but also know that I'll be limited in what I can do at home. Also, consider it's a family of 3 with a teenager that likes to workout as well.
Thoughts on either, and does anyone have a treamill and weight setup that they love if I decide to go that direction?
Thanks!

Thanks for the recommendations - we are staying in Trastevere as well. I'm intrigued by the winery owned by Sting for sure.
re: Need recommendations for meals/wineries in Italy- Rome/Florence/Tuscany

Thanks! That’s where I’m looking at apartments to rent, so good to hear. I’ve heard it’s a great neighborhood with lots of food and drink options.
Thanks - I’ll definitely look into these.

Good stuff! And I’ve heard the same thing about the touristy places. That pasta in the cheese with truffles looks amazing. Appreciate the info.

Planning out a Thanksgiving trip to Italy and looking for any recommendations.
- Any memorable meals (fancy or hole in the wall places) that we should look into?
- Any wineries that we should hit? For reds, we love big/bold wines.
- Looking to do a cooking class or food tour with our teenagers.
TIA!

Thanks for the input - definitely leaning towards getting some Tuscan time in there instead of strictly Rome/Florence.

Bumping thread as to not start a new thread on Italy, and I've already asked a few questions here.
Booked to in/out of Rome for Thanksgiving week.
What are the best areas to stay in both Rome and Florence to get an authentic stay and be close enough to walk everywhere, but not be in the super touristy/busy areas.
i.e., in Paris we stayed in Saint German de Pres and loved being close enough to everything but having more of a low key neighborhood with lots of food/drink options close. Have two teenagers to entertain as well.
Thinking 3 nights in Rome, 5 in Florence, or should we do 2 Rome/3 Florence/3 Tuscany?
How would you rank the following to visit: Siena, Chianti, Orvieto, San Gimignano, Pisa, Lucca, Montelcino?
Is Naples/Pompeii worth taking the day trip?
Thanks!

Yes, fun vibe. The performers from the show next-door walk around and perform randomly. We went right as they opened because we were going to another show, but there was still plenty of action. They have a fresh mozzarella app that they come to your table to make that is pretty cool, and make sure to check out the Après Ski speakeasy right outside of the restaurant for a drink.

A school can spend a million dollars on security. A 300-person private school can’t.
My child's private elementary school added a full-time armed police officer and asked that each family contribute $150 to offsetting the cost to the school. My other child's private high school did the same.
Both have had their facilities retrofitted with additional security measures as well, since both are open campuses instead of a traditional single-entrance school.
It can be done with minimal contributions from families in addition to additional funding from the school, and call me naive, but I think most families would be willing to contribute to make these things happen in their children's schools.

Agree. It was good to see for a couple of days, but we enjoyed Paris so much more. We had our kids with us, and the only part of London they ever mention was going to a Chelsea/Tottenham match but remember in great detail almost everything we did in Paris. There's just something about it.
One thing that made a difference for us - we rented an apartment in St-Germain-des-Pres & The 6th Arrondissement and it really let us have the real feel of Paris. We did not enjoy the heavy tourist areas when went to see the Arc de Triumph and walked the Champs-Élysées, and I think had we stayed in one of the hotels in those areas their memories of Paris would be different.

We took the train and loved seeing the small villages in France, each with its own church. Very charming. It was very convenient and we upgraded on the train so that we could enjoy the views with a little privacy/comfort. Once in Paris, it is very easy to get anywhere from the station. We had a driver meet us on the platform and were out of the station very quickly.
Our itinerary had us fly into London and out of Paris, and after seeing the lines at LHR, I am so glad we did. Paris took a little while, but was much easier to get out of, in my opinion. I love Paris!

Meauxjeaux - did they end up planting it for you too? Can you give me a ballpark cost on what they charge for the plants plus labor?
I'm trying to block off line of sight to our home from people using the trace, and probably need a good bit. Just wondering what kind of cost to look for. Thanks!
Went with the family to London and then Paris for Mardi Gras 2020- literally at the Covid outbreak. It was cold but not crazy cold. Definitely doable - I think we over prepared and it wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be.
