Galveston Hotels/Restaurants

Wife (no pics) and I are heading to the Woodlands this weekend and she suggested we leave Thursday and go to Galveston for the day. Are there any nice hotels (other than Holiday, Hampton, Comfort Inns? Doesn't have to be 4 star, but just nicer than the aforementioned. A view and close proximity to water and restaurants would be a plus.
We may hang out on the beach Thursday. I realize it will be like going to the beach in Biloxi or Gulfport, but she said she just wants to have a "beach day".
Restaurant recs appreciated also.
TIA

And Moody Gardens.
Galvez and Tremont are pretty nice, just old. Maybe historic is a better term.
Food for Galveston has been done many times over on f&d board. Just Google tigerdroppings food and drink Galveston.

It's pretty easy to have an enjoyable weekend in Galveston without actually getting in the water. And with all the sargassum along the gulf coast beaches right now, Galveston Beach ain't that bad by comparison at the moment.

Gaido's is a solid restaurant and has been around for a long time.

Took a few days the first of June and visited Galveston for the first time. These are the two places that I personally went and enjoyed.
Original Mexican Cafe is a local place somewhat off the beaten path. Good food IMO.
Rita's frozen custard. Its on Seawall Blvd so it gets a little crowded. But. Quality product.

Galveston can be fun for the day. The Tremont and Hotel Galvez are cool and historic places. If you want to spend a night, do a ghost tour. You can tour the Elissa, the official Tall Ship of Texas and learn a bit of history of the Port of Galveston. There's quite a few cute shops on the Strand as well. I would not plan a beach day there.
Galveston has a lot of history if you're interested in that stuff. Otherwise, it's kind of our only semi-local beach, but it's sure not anywhere near a pretty one.

My favorite Mexican spot on the island.
Also, there are several historic homes you can tour, like the Bishop's Palace.

I would think if you're coming from the Woodlands you'd want to stay overnight.
Great rooftop bar in the old restored part of town on the top of the Tremont Hotel. Great part of town to walk around and eat and drink in the evening. Great hotel too.
