Friends,

Airbnb is an amateur organization of tourism hobbyists. Under poor judgment several months ago I was talked into this sort of lodging for an upcoming trip to NY. I make four trips every year because it is one of three cities in America worth visiting, New Orleans and DC being the other two. When Mother goes we stay at the Waldorf Astoria, which is currently undergoing a multiyear renovation. This trip in July, though, was to be a solo TulaneLSU trip to further explore some of New York’s pizza restaurants (see TulaneLSU’s Top 40 pizzas in the U.S.A.).

Today I received an email from my host requesting that I cancel the reservation due to the new virus. Besides believing that the virus pandemonium will be long passed by that time, I was quite appalled to receive this request, as I learned that if I initiate the cancelation Airbnb will charge me about $60. What gall for the host to tell me to initiate a cancellation.

This certainly will be the last time I rent from amateurs.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

I suggest keeping the reservation up and telling the owner that s/he will have to cancel it as you are still planning to go. If s/he no longer wants to offer the accommodation, s/he can cancel it on their own.

If you message them through Airbnb only in which your communication is clear, the host can either refund you 100% or Airbnb likely will given the circumstances.

The host can also initiate a cancellation, they just get dinged for it. So tell the host to initiate it.

Also, this is the exact opposite of what I expected fwiw. Most guys are complaining the CAN'T get a cancellation for this summer.

Since when does the host need the guest’s permission to cancel? I’ve had a host cancel on me before with no warning and no reason.
