On your first leg, if they can send your checked baggage to your destination then you won't have to get your bags and re-check them at the Int'l terminal
She's trying to book two separate airlines in each direction , and it is explicitly stated by the travel site that she's going to have to retrieve and re-check baggage in LAX, including on domestic transfers. This was the cheapest itinerary on Kayak, which involves Spirit and WizAir.

Good lord. No way I’d let my kid do that. Recipe for disaster.

It would help if you gave dates.
She hasn’t set a date yet, she’s looking at the end of May. Like I said in an earlier post, she is in her early stage of planning the trip. She’s 20 years old, not a kid. She has traveled international before, and has traveled a lot domestically (with us of course).
She is planning it, not me. She just asked me the question that had me start this thread, if she would have enough time in a 3-hour layover.
That question is now a moot point because she didn’t realize JetBlue didn’t fly direct to LAX.
She is gonna just book a round trip flight from MSY to Tokyo, it’s less hassle.

That’s a good thing. She’s traveled but she’s 20.

just under $1k one way for business.
ZIPAIR is all economy with the option to pay for a better (lie-flat) seat. They don't even have seatback IFE and you have to pay for almost everything onboard. They do have free WiFi though which is a plus.
Adjust your expectations accordingly.
