If you're looking to get outside of Asheville at all, I'd suggest Black Mountain/Montreat.

Black Mountain is a great small town about 25 minutes east and Montreat is another ~10 minutes north into a valley and has some really good hiking.

I'm assuming you're referring to Turtleback just upstream from Rainbow. I can't believe people swim up there. You're very close to the 150 ft Rainbow Falls drop off and if get caught in that current at Turtleback, you're dead (and people have died up there).

Here in Asheville now. We enjoy tubing down the French Broad (Zen Tubing). Zen has two options, we prefer the trip south of town as the river is wider and more serene.

Spent the afternoon walking around downtown. Dinner at Sierra Nevada tonight. Tomorrow tubing.

Mount Mitchell (highest point east of the Mississippi) is about an hour away. I’ve been there in January and it’s been in the 60s and been there in August when it’s been in the 60s. Some visits it’s clear and you can see for miles and others it’s been cloudy and you can’t see anything. You won’t know until you get there. It’s a slightly strenuous walk from the visitor center to the top.

Antique Tobacco Bar pan (near Biltmore Village, google it) would be a great three generation visit. I love walking around there with my daughter and your parents will enjoy showing the grandkids old things. We usually spend an hour or two there especially if the weather isn’t conducive to outside activities.

Asheville Pinball Museum is awesome. Old school pinball and arcade games.
