telluride is beautiful (we go there for a music festival in normal years) but it’s not really kid friendly. Activities abound in the area though. I think most people that rent off road vehicles do so in ouray and then take the passes west and south of there.

don’t miss the black canyon if you go thru montrose

4wd roads you'd recommend

All Trails has a filter for offroad trails. Be sure to read the descriptions. Easy is anywhere from a paved road to a gravel road that will rattle your fillings out. Moderate can get sketchy quickly especially if you have any concern about the condition of your car.

We’ll plan on renting a jeep in Ouray. Did realize that about AllTrails. I’ll check it out! I’ll ask the a rep. of the company we rent from for suggestions during the time we’ll be there.

Offroading should be in the Ouray area. Google Ouray Colorado off road jeep trails and you'll see 5-6 of them. You can look up videos on You Tube of the various trails. Some are really for experienced drivers in tricked out off road jeeps. They are actually rated based on difficulty.
