Making sure I understand this correctly, do you have to pay ($$) for the flight prior to 11/15/20 or can you use points and it still applies for this promotion?

ETA - Nevermind, I re-read right after I posted. Looks like it has to be a paid flight.

- "Charter flights, group travel, Southwest Vacations packages, and reservations made using Rapid Rewards points do not qualify for this promotion."

As I understand it:

Buy a flight by tomorrow. Take that flight between tomorrow and 11/15.

Will receive a companion flies free pass for use between 1/6-2/28/2021.

I interpreted it as the companion pass is valid during that entire time period. So not a one time use during that period. Is that your take too?

That's how i'm reading it as well, but will double check before booking this. Would be worth me flying SEA-SJC or SMF for a quick saturday trip. The only problem is flights are so cheap right now compared to previous that I'm wondering if this is actually worth it

I booked a flight that fits all this with SW, but it's travel I had to do anyway in the coming weeks. So, now I'll get a companion pass for the Jan-Feb promo. It's a toss up for if this is worth it to try and fly somewhere (and spend the money doing so) now, to get a companion pass for those dates.

If you don't HAVE to travel prior to Nov 15th and you don't know yet if you WILL travel those dates in 2021... you are sort of spending money for no reason now.

My wife and I have a trip already planned for January that is booked with RR points. I'm questioning myself on this, so I need some backup responses from the board. Wouldn't it make sense to for me to book a day trip MSY to HOU (approx $90) and pay for the RT fare in Jan (approx. $258)?

That would save the 67,392 miles for another trip.

You would save $168. So now the question is, is $168 worth it to you, for your time and hassle of flying to HOU and back? Which it may be, and if so then go ahead and do that.

I think you are right. I missed that. Good catch.

Thats a lot of points. You can use the pass with a flight booked with points.

With the way flights have been this year for SW, there's a lot of routes that you could easily get 2-3 RT tickets for 67k.

Question.

If I bought 1 one way ticket at the cheapest price to anywhere in that time frame, didn’t use it, then got the pass and used it in feb 2021 would I have access for the pass to be RT? Or no?

Trying to see if it works out or not to make this deal

Not sure if that would work. SW would know the ticket wasn't used so they may not give you the CP.

The CP usually works for every flight you take. OW or RT.

The requirements state you have to book a revenue flight (ie. a paid flight) by today (Sept 24th) and actually take that flight before Nov 15th. If you don’t meet those two criteria then you won’t get the companion pass in Jan/Feb 2021.

In other words, booking a flight today and either canceling it later, deferring it later, or not taking it, will not qualify you for this promotion.
