Good morning TB!

I will be heading to Europe again soon and my itinerary is mostly done for me, besides a few “free days” that I have nothing planned. All of the big things are taken care of, but one of my favorite things about travel is the food and drink. I was looking for a little help with some opinions on what each location is “known for” and where is the best place to eat/drink it.

I will be going to: Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Potsdam, Dresden, Bratislava, Cesky Krumlov, Vicenza, and Venice

I have been to Venice, so I have a few spots there (Siempione and a family owned place near San Jeronimos church), but more suggestions would be welcome.

I have heard I must try Sachertorte in Vienna (even though I’m not big on sweets).

Any specific recommendations on the other places? Like I said, local food suggestion and the best place to get it would be awesome. Great restaurants would also be appreciated!

Prague

Pilsner Urquell, pork knuckle, sausage(with plenty of paprika used in it) and a trdelnik (hollow, cylindrical, dough roasted over an open flame and sprinkled with sugar). There's also some great places around town to get local craft beers. In fact, there's lots of beer pretty much everywhere.

My favorite place to get these things was from a market at the Old Town Square. It seems like they always have something going on with vendors selling food/drink. It's super cheap too.

Viennese bakers invented most of the pastry arts...or at least perfected them to a high standard. Go to Demel, a wonderland/temple of cake & confectionary. Look at the pics and you may find yourself joining team sweets: LINK To walk through a cold, gray day to Demel and have a hot chocolate (mit schlag, always say yes when asked "mit schlag?"), contemplate the huge array of cakes on offer, and then spend an hour or two enjoying the room & the cake...

I have been to Vienna once and Venice twice and am going back to Venice next week. In Vienna the famous dessert is the Sacher torte. They have several famous and elegant coffee shops that serve the Sacher torte along with a wide variety of other pastries. We went to several including Café Demel and the café in the Sacher Hotel. The Sacher torte will not wow you but you are there for the atmosphere. As for restaurants, Stiereck in the park is a Michelin 3star and is recognized as one of the best restaurants in the world. More down to earth is Plachutta, a very good restaurant just off the Ringstrasse, specializing in Talesplitz (sp). You pick out the cut of meat you want and they slice it thin and boil it at the table with vegetables in a copper pot. You have the broth as a soup course then eat the meat. We had dinner there then walked to the Sacher Hotel for dessert.

Group travel. I think dresden is about halfway between Berlin and Prague, so I'm sure we will just stop there, have dinner and spend the night.

I know it isn’t fancy, but in Vienna, definitely go to the Wurstelstand by the opera house. I also enjoyed Cafe Drechsler.

In Praha, go to the Lokal Dlouha. For a relaxing drink, I’d suggest the James Joyce Pub. Harley’s if you want to get wild.

Drink some Kozel for me.

Thanks! doesn't have to be fancy. Some of the best meals and drinks have come from the smallest hole in the wall!

Thanks, I look up what Kozel is and I'll try that!

The first two posts covered everything I would have said, but let me add this: in Prague, find an authentic fruit-filled kolache; also, you have to have an original Budweiser Budvar.

In Vienna, at Demel, the thing to order is the “Schockobombe”. It is life altering. Really.

Also in Vienna, if you want to stock up on food gifts and souvenirs (chocolate/coffee), you can go to the Julius Meinl grocery store that is in the historic area. You can also have an ice cold Ottakringer at the bar. In the grocery store.

I loved Vienna.

It seems like everyone that I have spoken with has loved Vienna. I know very little about it, but I'm excited to experience it now.
