For a 10-12 night trip. Time of year early fall or spring (April/May).
Trying to decide among some combinations of:

A. Lake Como/Swiss side of the lake/Portofino
B. Spain/Portugal
C. France - start in Paris and then stay in the countryside or south of France

Would only want to stay in 2-3 locations 3 being the absolute max. Enjoy food and wine and being near/on water. Want to feel more relaxed rather than having to see everything at one. Have to hit the big cities (Paris/Barcelona) but like to stay somewhere smaller and quieter as well. Following the Spain and Portugal thread that's going on right now. Budget is probably $$$ out of 4 - willing to splurge in one location if it suits.

Looking for any and all recs

If you have never been to Paris before, I would choose C. You could stay in Paris the whole time and take a few day trips, or take the Eurostar to London for a few days.

With regard to B, you are right about the other thread on Spain and Portugal - lots of good information on there. Barcelona has it all - Food, wine, beaches, art, archetecture, and lots of things to do and see.

With reagrd to A - That will fit your bill for relaxation.
If you want to stay on the Swiss side of the lake region, I waold suggest Lugano, Switzerland. Lake Lugano is the next lake over from Como. That is a beautiful area.
The closest I have been to Portofino is the Cinque Terre. Spectacular scenery and great for hiking.

EDIT to add another idea. Downtown Paris and downtown Barcelona direct train ride away from each other. We made that trip a few years ago. We flew in to Barcelona, stayed a week, took the train to Paris, stayed there a week and flew home. You will not do much relaxing over pastoral scenery, but you can't have everything at the same time.

I don’t think there’s a bad choice here.

If you want more city, C. If you want more views and privy area, A. Low key and still Good adventure, B

Never been to Como, but have been to Switzerland. Did a Spain/Portugal trip. And most recently France.

Perhaps it’s recency bias, but I enjoyed France the best and would go back there before the others. Spent the longest time in France compared to others as well.

For options B and C, really thinking about doing Barcelona or Paris for about 4-5 nights.. then somewhere smaller in a house or villa for the rest and doing day trips via car. If that helps.

How does one travel from say Barca to Portugal? Looks like trains are pretty long rides, not opposed to flying

I don’t think it takes all that long, Barcelona to madrid by train is only a couple hours. Remember countries in Europe aren’t that big

The train connections between spain and portugal are horrible. The fastest route is 11.5 hours and includes a bus ride.

You need to keep in mind weather. If Spring for example that's not the best time to be around the mountains due to mud season, when the snow melts.

I've never been to Lake Como but been to Lake Garda and that area of northern Italy twice. Beautiful area and I love the combination of Italy and mountains.

Who is going on the trip? Just a couple? Ages? What type of trip do you want?

We are going to Paris for 2 weeks for Thanksgiving. Staying in an apt and doing day trips by car and train.

Hell, I took a bus from Santiago de Compostela to Lisbon and it was around 9 hours, so that may be about right. Nice bus and pretty peaceful, similar to FlixBus though.
