Enrollment fees for miles programs - Cathay Pacific

Random question. I'm a frequent traveler, but haven't really paid much attention to miles in the past. However, I am moving to Hong Kong and will have lots of travel, so I decided to enroll in the Cathay Pacific frequent travellers club (Marco Polo club).
They charge $100 to join the program. Is this normal? Seems a bit odd. Is it worth it? Do other airlines charge for their programs?

It’s Cathay Pacific aka the cream of the crop, they can do what they want

I don't think Marco Polo club is used for flight redemptions. I think that is through the Asia Miles program. I think MP allows you the priority check-in, club access, etc

Ya Cathay is Asia Miles.
It's a confusing deal.
Dunson, AA miles can be used for Cathay flights as well, so if you can rack those up you can use those too.
So now you get to explore SE Asia at will? I'm jealous of you and your kids.

The number of club points earned determines your tier status. Upon renewal, upgrade or downgrade, your club points will automatically be reset to zero and a new membership year begins. Asia Miles are the currency for flight or lifestyle award redemptions and are valid for three years.

Must have a different program, because when I flew with them 2 months ago, they were part of Asia Miles and it was free.
And Cathay Pacific was the shite.

Like others have said I t's another level of loyalty club.
I would just use an AA or British Airways mileage account and credit trips to one of those. BA usually has good mileage redemption rates on awards tickets on other oneworld carriers.

Thanks, that article was helpful!
I'll stock with the free Asia Miles program.

quote:yeah. New job, new country, new continent to explore with the kids! We're pretty excited, and the wife and I are already short listing our must-see countries for the next few years. Drop me a line if you are heading this way. You have a place to stay in Hong Kong!

I was just there, loved the city. Will def be back. Hell, I'd love to live there if I could find a job that way or even a job that allowed me regular travel between the states and there.
You staying on the island? I've heard housing over there is ridiculous.

You got it. Was looking at Japan but Hong Kong is a possible alternative/stop.
Thailand is going to be your most kid friendly destination in the region so it may be the best place to start.
If you go to Northern India email me. I know a great driver who can take care of you.
Otherwise, have fun.

quote:yeah. Still looking at places but definitely will live on the island. My office is in central and we are looking at schools on the island. It's pretty expensive but I have a good housing budget.

I've never been there. Moving there sight unseen, but everyone I know who has been or lived there has loved it.

It’s amazing, public transport is incredible. The newer areas/buildings are incredible and high end, but there is a lot of old sprinkled in, however, it’s safe as can be.
Honk Kong airport is legit. The peak has amazing views. Hiking is huge over there. Only 2hr flight from the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Like I said, I’ve been exploring opportunities over there. Enjoy! I hope to be back in a month or two.
