Eagle/Vail or Denver airport

...for a winter ski trip to Summit County. Is the proximity of EGE worth double to triple the cost of flying into Denver? I know you avoid the exodus traffic eastbound on 70...

Denver all the way. I tried flying into vail last year and the flight got diverted back to DFW, cancelled, and again cancelled. Ended up in denver and the drive was fine with rocky mountain express, save your $$

If you're going to Summit County, go to Denver. Get a shuttle. If you're going to Beaver Creek and/or Vail, then Eagle might be worth it.
Eagle to Summit County, especially Breckenridge is no short endeavor, and Vail Pass could mess up your plans just as easily as the Front Range traffic.
Better yet, skip Summit County. Book now and fly into Hayden, 23 miles west of Steamboat. They land a way higher percentage of flights than the rest of the regional mountain airports in Colorado. Once you get west of Steamboat, you're in the high mountain desert basically. Planes can usually circle around if needed. Though there is still a chance you winter storms will hinder your plans. It's not a guarantee.
Not to mention, Steamboat is a great resort to visit. Unless you're coming during the big ski season holidays (Christmas to New Years, MLK, Presidents Day) then you shouldn't see a ton of crowds either. They don't get the weekend warrior Front Rangers that clog up Summit County on the regular.
Though, Steamboat will be on the Ikon Pass this year, and I'd be interested to see how it will affect their traffic. I don't think it will change much, Denver people have to drive past so many resorts on I70 to get to Steamboat.

Great post. That is the type of insider knowledge that is near impossible to find on the general internet.

This is likely when we are going. Trying to find the best combination of price and early season snow with enough stuff to entertain a couple of kids

I’ve flown into EGE numerous times. I’ve never had any problems. I’ve also never paid double the cost of flying into Denver. It’s awfully convenient for the area (Eagle County).
However, It’s not worth double the cost or more if your destination is Summit County. Copper Mtn might be worth it if the cost was a little lower, but Vail Pass would scare the hell out of me.

What? Eagle to Breck is pretty damn short, like 45 minutes. Yeah Vail pass gets fricked occasionally but if he isn’t going to Steamboat then flying in Hayden is stupid.
Fly into to DIA and get the damn shuttle. You don’t know how to drive in snow and have business starting now.

Eagle-Vail, just west of Vail, might be 45 minutes to Breck but the Eagle Regional airport is in Eagle proper, and 73 miles to Breckenridge. 1hr 22min according to Apple Maps on my phone. You’re not making it there in 45 minutes in the winter.
Eagle-Vail =\= Eagle. Not the same place.
And yes, certainly don’t fly into Hayden unless you wanna go to Steamboat. That’s pretty obvious. But I think Steamboat could fit his criteria.
This could be said about half the Front Rangers that are weekend warriors on the slopes. Yet you see them trying to send it up the Eisenhower Tunnel on a powder day anyways.

Which ski resorts have the most reliable early-season snow? I know nothing can be guaranteed but historically which mountain has the most open at Christmas, in your experience?

Wolf Creek can go from 0% open to 100% open in a storm or two early season. They get huge storms down in the San Juan’s.
But I don’t think they have a snow making operation. You woulda been in real bad shape this year in southern Colorado.
All the major resorts can crank out snow and get slopes over quick, but you really need the natural snow to start dropping more terrain. Summit County is a pretty good bet for early season snow. High elevation and large snow making operations.
Keystone is very kid friendly and you can find some killer package deals. Copper is the same way without the Epic Pass crowds.
ABasin is my favorite spot. The best green runs in Summit County with some of the best views. It’s smaller and not what you’re gonna get from some of the Vail resorts. No lodging on site, but it’s a short drive or bus ride from Keystone. It’s a good one to throw in as a single day. Cheaper tickets for sure.

Been to Copper and Breck twice each. Never to Keystone. Will probably stick with one of those due to higher elevations.
A-basin would be cool if it were just me, but I’ll need more to entertain the kids and pacify the wife for a week. Thanks for your help

You don’t get the Main Street or town feel at Keystone like you do in Breck, but it’s definitely got a ton of stuff to keep the kids occupied and happy. Snow maze at the top. Mascot parades thru the village. All that jazz. But it’s nice because most lodging is right within the vicinity of the Keystone village.
It’s not that far from Frisco or Breck if ya wanted to leave for a day and explore a Main Street area. Keystone is just down the road from Dillon which has all your grocery stores, fast food, dispensaries, movie theater, bowling, etc.

I prefer Eagle airport but two years ago the airport was closed for 4 straight days. We ended up having to drive through the snow and fly out of Denver. Still prefer that to Denver though.
