Durango lodging vs. Purgatory lodging

Looking for a change of scenery (other than Breck/Keystone) and heading to Purgatory at the end of January for a couple of days skiing.
Trying to decide on lodging as the Purgatory base has limited options (restaurants and bars seem a little limited as well). Wondering if it might be easier to simply stay in Durango (more options) and drive up to ski each day?? Just the wife (no pics) and I on somewhat of a reconnaissance trip to check it out for a possible future trip with all the kids. Flying in on Saturday, skiiing Sunday and Monday then flying back home on Tuesday.
TIA with any suggestions.....

I stayed at the doubletree in downtown Durango and loved it. My room had a massive balcony(for a hotel) that faced the river. The room was pretty big too.
I loved staying in town and just driving up to ski. The town was lively and I like exploring the local scene.

I second the Doubletree.

As you inferred, there isn’t much at Purgatory. Dining options are limited and grocery availability minimal.
Durango, on the other hand, is a gem of a town. Much more than just a stereotypical mountain town, it’s more like a college town with good local vibes and a nice downtown scene.
The drive to the mountain isn’t awful, but it’s no inconsequential. Well worth it to stay in Durango, though.

Definitely stay in town. Doubletree is a good option…. But I would go with The Strater. Located on Main Street and a historic hotel that is pretty awesome. Also it is much cheaper to stay in town

What’s the drive like going up to the ski areas?

I enjoyed Durango when I went. It was our home base for venturing out in the area.

The Strater Hotel is a great place to stay…ditto for the General Palmer…both in downtown Durango.
Check when Snowdown 2025 is. It’s sometime in late January/early February. Lot of concerts, downtown parade…Durango is just a hoot no matter what the season.

I’ve always stayed in town. I’d drive or take the bus to the ski resort. Downtown area is very cool and trendy

Went there a few years ago with a our family of 9. We stayed in a house at the resort and to be honest the only benefit was the ski in/ski out. The entire resort pretty much shuts down around 6ish including restraurants so your only option is to hangout in your room/house. If you dont mind the drive everyday then definitely just stay in Durango.

I am going to Purg at the end of January. We are staying two nights in Purg and one night at the Doubletree. The resort restaurant is nothing special and very expensive. Other than that there is the Nugget that has a food truck and the School House for Pizza.
I agree with the other post with the Double Tree and Strater are the best two options. Both are nice. You can walk downtown from both hotels. The Strater has a cool Saloon.
The only reason we are staying at Purg is its a guy's trip and everyone drinks so we don't have to drive. Other than that I would say stay in town.
Check out Steamworks in Durango. Good food and fun atmosphere for drinks. Also, Durango Bagal has good breakfast in the morning when heading up to Purg.
If you didn't already, buy your lift ticket online before and you get a credit you can use for drinks and food on the mountain on certain days.

Drive to resort is very easy. 2 lanes almost the whole way…. Roads don’t get dicey till about 4 miles away if it has been snowing. Durango is my home town, grew up there. Let me know if you have any other questions!
