Heading to Key West in a March. Is the seaplane trip to Dry Tortugas worth the $360 price tag?
Are there other similar excursions that I should consider instead?

The ferry is quite a bit cheaper, if you want to save some $. I've only ever taken the boat. The Dry Tortugas is my favorite thing to do in Key West, and it's not even close.

You can take the ferry if you don't want to spend the extra $$ for the plane. I think it's about 2 hours there and 2 hours back depending on conditions, so you're trading travel time and time spent at the fort for a cheaper option. I've only ever taken the ferry, but would like to try the plane next time. I'm sure the view is spectacular.

Just got back from key West for Mardi Gras break. Took seaplane; was our favorite part of trip. Pilot was very informative and pointed out 2 sunken ships, sea turtles, sharks and dolphins. Not sure how ferry is but plane was worth the money.

How cold was the water? Miserable or just a chilly?

Any other recommendations on what to do and not to do?

Nope. You get to stay twice as long at the Fort if you take the boat ride instead.

We rented a 150hp center console boat and took it out to Bocha key, which was our favorite part of our trip last summer.

When chartering, I am assuming its a lot pricier, or are there ways to combine with strangers?

Dry Tortugas is something we want to do this time.

Id imagine you might be able to combine on a charter boat with others, just like a normal fishing trip. Sorry not much help in that department, I usually bring my own boat when down in the Keys

What size would you need to make it out there?

I guess that all depends on your experience. I have a 24ft. I think its like 75 miles or so each way, so key is making sure you have at minimum 200 miles distance on the tank

Not trying to hijack, but has anyone made the drive from Miami to Key West? Any must stop and see attractions or restaurants?

Is there search feature, there are plenty of threads both on the drive to Key West and Key West itself.
