December mountain vacation

Looking for a destination in the mountains to getaway to the second week in December. The wife will be out on surgery leave and she will be 6 weeks post shoulder recovery and want to go somewhere 8-10 hours drive away from south La. She would like the small town Christmas feel for a few days. Gatlinburg is not an option for this trip. I was thinking north Georgia. Any recommendations welcome. Hiking, shopping, good eats and breweries are thing of interest. Thanks.

Where do you live?
Oh, and fly to Colorado.

Utah is great, too, and much much cheaper than CO. Fly into Salt Lake and drive to, well, anywhere along the Wasatch range. Most ppl go to Park City.

We hang around Summit County a good bit. That means Breckenridge, Frisco, and the ski areas around there. There may still be some available hiking, but snowfall will likely mean most of the trails are closed for the season.
But, there are a ton of activities. The town of Breckenridge has a great main street, awesome food options, plenty of shopping, and there is a ton of sightseeing that can be done in the area. Snowshoeing is an option, as is dog sledding, snowmobile riding, And of course skiing, but given your wife will be recovering from a surgery I don’t know if that is in your wheelhouse.
You can fly in to Denver and either catch a shuttle or drive about 100 miles west and you are in Breck. Early December is not the best time for downhill skiing, so the town won’t be quite as crowded as it will be from Christmas through late March. Check it out.

We stumbled on Christmas in the Square (or something like that) in Elijay last year. Very much a small town production. It sounds a lot like what you are looking for.
