CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — A cruise ship with nearly 150 people aboard was waiting for help off the coast of Cape Verde in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday after three passengers died and at least three other people were left seriously ill in a suspected outbreak of the rare hantavirus, according to the World Health Organization and the ship’s operator. ... ...

Two of the people who died were identified as a Dutch couple, a man aged 70 and a woman aged 69. The man died on arrival on the island of St. Helena. The woman, who also became ill on board, was evacuated to South Africa, where she died in a Johannesburg hospital, South African Health Ministry spokesperson Foster Mohale said in a statement to Global News.
If that Dutch couple had children that would be quite an ordeal for that family, processing this news... father's body in St. Helena and mother's body in South Africa.

Hantavirus spreads primarily to humans through contact with infected rodents (mice and rats) and their excreta. The most common transmission method is inhaling airborne virus particles stirred up from dried rodent urine, droppings, or saliva when cleaning enclosed spaces, such as cabins or sheds. Person-to-person transmission is generally not seen.

I just saw a bulletin from the hospital on Ascension Island where I had previously worked the past 4+ yrs and they said that they had a patient test positive for the virus there this past week.
The person is ok, but they're taking precautions similar to when covid first broke out.
