Anyone have any experiences from Greece trip? Specifically, looking for recommendations for the island of Crete. It looks like there is lots to do related to the outdoors, history, and beaches. We would likely stay in Athens for a day or two to see sites. Then take overnight ferry to island. It’s a large island so we probably would rent a car but quick search indicates they are cheap.

Major cities are Heraklion and Chania. Would rather just outside city. Trying to get ideas.

Following. I'd love to spend a week here and excursion to some of the surrounding islands.

I spent about a week in Crete a couple years ago. Chania is a great town, with a really neat harbor. Rakynthos (sp?) was also very nice.

I made Chania my base and just drove around checking off a list of beaches. Also hiked down the Samaria gorge, which is an absolute must do.

The food is incredible too.

My daughter and son-in-law spent a week there last month on their honeymoon and loved it. They especially simply enjoyed walking around the old areas of Chania and Rethymnon, but they also liked the Palace of Knossos.

They stayed in the Royal Senses (Hilton affiliated) near Rethymnon, which was a good base to explore from.

As you mentioned, a car is really a must.
