Headed to El Paso this February (18-25th) or April (1st-8th) for a week to visit White Sands NP, Carlsbad Caverns NP, and Guadalupe Mtns NP.

We thought about spending a day in Cloudcroft but dont know if it is worth it. Anyone visited?

If you like outdoors it would be great at this time of year. Probably be 15 degrees cooler than in the valleys. Very small town, great hikes and great views over the desert.
Ride the back road up to Ruidoso.More things to do there.

Consider also visiting Hatch, the home of Hatch chiles. Good food and you can buy all the peppers you need for a lifetime.

We love all things New Mexico and have talked about Cloudcroft. We've done northern NM extensively, especially Santa Fe and Enchanted Circle. We've also done quite a bit in the south (Las Cruces area). I'd be very curious to hear about other's experiences in Cloudcroft.

We've also been curious about Ruidoso.

If you are going to White Sands you should go to Cloudcroft. They are not that far apart. Have lunch at Mad Jack's BBQ in Cloudcroft. Great bbq but check hours on his website. If you end up in Hatch, get a green chile burger at Sparky's.

We went there last November, but my dad was stationed at Alamogordo so I had some nostalgic reasons.

Mad Jacks is no BS great BBQ- Odd hours and run out of food, so plan accordingly.

We drove from Carlsbad early AM and were in Alamogordo by night, wish we had another couple hours:
1.) Sunspot
2.) Bluff Springs (nostalgic but maybe some good hikes around? Nice quiet area)
3.) An hour to walk around town
4.) Alamogordo Space Museum
5.) Pistachio land

Honestly that area is great "road tripping" land, imo. Extremely untouristy, open land scape, and ever changing landscape. Great places to just pull over at a diner in a random place.

Cloudcroft in snow is really nice, well worth it.
Made that leg from Carlsbad, to White sands and on into the mountain and really liked it. Second leg of a four week drive and with Carlsbad and White Sands being my goal and the mountains were just an unexpected treat.

Cloudcroft is pretty, but just a small mountain town. If you are visiting white sands I'd say might as well visit, but I wouldn't go out of my way. Unless it's changed in the past ten years bring cash, as a couple of the only restaurants in town were cash only when I went.

I'm doing this exact same trip this coming weekend, looping from El Paso to White Sands, Carlsbad, Guadalupe, then back to El Paso. I will be stopping in Cloudcroft to eat at Mad Jack's BBQ while driving from White Sands -> Carlsbad.

Had a very limited budget for a trip this late in the year, and it looks like this will give me a lot of bang for the buck in terms of outdoors and hiking.
