Any recommendations for place to visit with a family and young kids over Christmas? I understand Munich and Vienna have really nice Christmas markets. What about a chalet in the Alps? Or just a visit to London? We’ll already be in Budapest but looking to travel somewhere else so all location in Europe are possible.

It gets dark really early in England at Christmas.

Yes - I’ve heard they’re nice in Vienna which is like a four hour drive

The Christmas markets are nice, but not exactly tremendous fun for young children (exactly how young?) Some (much?) of the charm of the markets is drinking hot spiced wine or punsch, while hanging out and eating. Shopping is for handicrafts, traditional items, small gifts. Most have entertainment at certain times. But I don't know that the average 5 year old would be very entertained by it.
Strasbourg has a very nice market, and Nuremberg's is also widely regarded as exemplary. One benefit to Munich--it's a constellation of 5 or 6 markets, scattered in different parts of the city. There's the main one in Marienplatz, one in the Englischergarten, Rindermarkt, etc. Each one has a different emphasis/theme, though they do sell many of the same items & food/drink.
While I love London, I'd probably pick Strasbourg or another town with a Christkindlmarkt over London at Christmas.

The alps will be in high season especially anywhere near ski areas, so you are going to want to find a place ASAP most likely.
You could easily do the Alps and Munich together, they are 60 minutes to 90 minutes apart at the most by train or car.
What specifically are you looking to do? Outside of the Christmas markets? Anywhere in the Alps would be great I'm sure.

My top three from Germany:
Heidelberg
Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Nuremberg
The christmas market in the aldstadt in Heidelberg is about as storybook as it gets. Especially if there's snow.

Strasbourg on the France/Germany border has an awesome christmas market if you'll be that far west. As for the Alps check out Bern, Switzerland the family would love it.

Have only been to Nurnberg's Christkindlmarkt. It was beautiful.
