Looking at going for a long weekend this fall. My wife wants to fly in Friday AM and out Monday AM - is this enough time to enjoy the city or should I push for arriving Thursday?

Yeah that should be plenty of time to explore the city.

Wouldn't be enough time if you're hoping to do day trips outside the city, though.

Yeah, you'll be fine doing that. Just take the train out to foxborough - traffic is an absolute shitshow getting there on game days.

Depends on what you're interested in.

History?
Sports?
Beer?
Food?
Tours?

Have to give me a little more to go on.

We went for Memorial Day weekend. Do a hop on, hop off tour (or duck tour). Do the freedom mile and JFK presidential museum for sure. Mike's Pastry in little italy for a cannoli. Harbor cruise was also nice.

You just listed every super touristy thing possible. Minus Sam Adams.

Well, they were tourists, so...

I did stuff like that my first trip, too. I don't hold that against first time visitors.

I went like 7 times in the last 1.5 years and moving there in a week so now I'm more interested in carving out my favorite local spots (and have found some faves), but I understand someone wanting to hit the historical hot spots if they've never been and don't get there often.

To each their own. I like avoiding tourist-heavy stuff when I travel. But whatever you enjoy, go for it.

Where in Boston will you be living? Premature welcome to the city.

I mean, I'm mostly with you on that, but Boston has SO much history that I feel as though it would be doing oneself a disservice to not experience at least some of it. It's easy to find a balance.

And thanks! I'll be right around Porter Square. I'm excited! It's pretty different from Austin but hopefully I will adjust.

Ah nice. My sister lives in Austin and it's a great city. Boston has a lot going for it though.

I work in Davis Square so not far at all from where you'll be living.

Austin is fine but enough has changed in the last 11 years that I've been here that I'm ready for a change. I'll miss tacos, though.

Check out Loco in Southie. I'm not saying they'll be as good as what you can get in Austin, but they make some damn good tacos.

One of the most fun things I did on my first weekend in Boston was a sort of impromptu freedom trail bar crawl. Just started in the Common, walked along the freedom trail, and had a drink or two at nearby bars along the way (started at 21st Amendment, then Beantown Pub, then Bell in Hand, etc.). Full disclosure, I stopped at the Old North Church because I didn't feel like going all the way to Charlestown.

At any rate, enjoy your time in the city.
