Trying to plan our summer trip out west and was thinking about flying into Denver driving through the ski area towns to BCotG and then over to Arches and Canyonlands and then up to Salt Lake and flying back home.

I have a pretty good idea of the other places but how is Black Canyon of the Gunnison? Are there enough things to do there to spend a couple of days? Will have a 4 and 6 year old...

Head over to Ouray/Silverton and even venture over to Mesa Verde. Gunnison is cool though, but that area is awesome.

I don't remember a lot to do there for a 4 and 6 year old. We didn't stay there long; nice view but I don't remember much beyond that. Monarch Pass has a ski lift you can take higher up in the summer and a nice gift shop with excellent ice-cream. A lot of people were rafting on the Arkansas River around Salida.

I rafted there once. Beautiful area. That part of Colorado is fun to just drive around in and sightsee. We camped out by Blue Mesa Resevoir as well. Very nice but rural area. Lots of rustic motels .

Absolutly breathtaking in that are and not a damn thing for those two kids to do, they will only be entertained by scenery for just so long.

Ouray/Silverton

Gunnison is fine, but I definitely agree with heading further into the SW corner of the state. Ouray/Silverton/Telluride/Durango/Ridgway/.

The Black Canyon is a pretty dramatic sight. I suggest driving to the bottom from the South Rim access as well (just be prepared to be in 1st gear and still riding the breaks the whole way down).

I'd make sure to drive across Red Mountain Pass between Ouray and Silverton. Stunning. The old mining ruins are a fun sight as well.

ETA: Lake City is a great, tiny little town with tons of varying levels of offroading and hiking nearby. Engineer Pass and Uncompahgre Peak (the tallest peak in the San Juan Mountains) are nearby.

Possibly of some use, I did a big review from a September trip where we started in Las Vegas and did the Utah Mighty 5 all the way up to SLC for a few days. All with a then 2 and 4 year old.
