I think if it’s just the wife and I we will rent a convertible and enjoy the drive. If a group of us time flights out to meet up and transport together sounds like going by boat might be a nice option and wouldn’t be too expensive depending on how many of us are splitting the cost.

I would wager that the time difference is negligible, plus there are some good places to grab food along the way. My cousin lives on islamorada, if you have the time I would recommend looking for an air BNB on one of the keys with a nice view and relax.

I've been to key west for a wedding before. It's an interesting place. Watch out for lizards the size of your car.

Is driving down your only option? Have you ever done the drive before? If not, it's probably worth doing as there are a lot of pretty views mixed in with the traffic. If you go with a group, you might want to look into booking a limo or bus. Just remember, you've got to get back to Miami too, and believe me, the ride back up is not nearly as fun as the ride down. Would look into moving your flight into EYW if at all possible. If you do have to fly into Miami, I would put renting a car as a last option. You would have to drop it at the airport there anyway as there really isn't any practical use for it on the island due to lack of parking.
