The southeast side of the island is not commercialized at all, & has some nice Airbnb’s.

Downtown Aruba is for the birds

Pick a very small one. Almost all of the Caribbean is over commercialized.

Barbados was phenomenal. We stayed in an Airbnb and drove everywhere. Very, very nice island and did not feel touristy at all.

Oh, well, then in that case I wouldn’t describe Aruba as a commercialized island. NYC isn’t really an urban area either, because there are some fields on Staten Island without houses or businesses.

The prime tourist location of Aruba consists of high rise hotels with casinos. I don’t know the OP, but it doesn’t sound like he was looking for that.

So tell us more about your trip there? What part of the island did you stay on? The people? Food/drink? Prices?

I'm sure the gf may ask about safety concerns as you discuss the options. While I have been to a number of islands, and never had any issues, it warrants some research on what's going on.

The State Department site rates countries and has a wealth of information. Trip Advisor forums are another great source.

Good article

And always remember we live or visit major cities all the time that have far worse crime rates. Simple safety precautions and common sense prevail anywhere you go.

Is this the island off Honduras you posted a pic of the other day?

I did a little research on it and it looks awesome. Except flights from my local airport were around $3k

We stayed on the western side of the island. Very calm water. There are restaurants all along the coast. They pretty much all are either small/local restaurants or very nice restaurants.

People were very nice. It was a British colony so everyone speaks English, but they drive on the left side of the road so prepare for that if renting a car (which I recommend). There was a grocery store down the road that was nicer than the publix near my house

It is a pricier island, but most of the restaurants have websites with menus so you could check to see if that works for you. They have their own currency, but accept USD and credit cards everywhere. It’s a 2:1 ratio so anything listed in Barbados dollars, just half it for USD.

I would recommend taking a trip to the north side of the island to visit the animal flower cave and also going to the animal reserve. All of the animals are free roaming in a big fenced area.

It is. It’s a great time and cheap. If you’re a diver it’s pretty much paradise. We usually get hit for $700-$800 a ticket when we go. It can be a little difficult to get to at times.

What do you want to do? Dive? Fish? Party? Beach? Snorkel? Windsurf? Hike?

Different islands are good for different things.
