St. John. Great beaches. 60% of the island is national park with tons of trails and the BVI is just a ferry ride away (remember your passport).

We almost went to St. John, so the above comments seem amazing.
We did go to Turks and Caicos. If that's a primary goal, then I'd suggest looking into that as well. Not much to do but the beach, and their beaches there are ranked among the best in the world. And I don't think Provo is all that commercialized and you do have other out islands you could visit as well. Not much hiking though unless you count walking up and down the beach. Very easy flight getting there too, so that's a plus.
Also, per my original post, Grenada is not very developed and it does have some very nice beaches, AND amazing hiking (an island with waterfalls and rain forests if you can imagine! We didn't go to Carriacou, an island part of Grenada, but that'd be as about as undeveloped as it gets! And you could take a day trip, or even spend some time on nearby Petit St. Vincent! I don't remember the costs, but one way to go is to fly into Union Island, then take a boat tour that goes to different islands-such as PSV and many others in the Grenadines. Visit Tobago Cays marine park. There was a ferry that went over there as well. A bucket list trip still on the books for me!

I'm certified, but didn't get to dive in Grenada. It's known as "The Wreck Capital Of The World" and would have loved to have tried some of them. Did charter a snorkeling trip and that was fun. Took my son fishing and that was great as well. Caught a 47 lb Wahoo. Boat Taken.
For Carriacou, Not much going on the island apparently, but that works for some! It is the TRUE Caribbean experience supposedly according to a woman I corresponded with a lot on the trip planning and who had an amazing villa on the island. You can do a day-trip if you want and go to Sandy Island to snorkel and hang out.
These are some notes she sent me FWIW...
Places to see in Carriacou:
Boat trip to Sandy Island, White Island, Saline Island (any of these are a 1/2 day trip and bring picnic)
Slipway restaurant-closed Monday
Round House restaurant-call when closed and make reservation
Trip to town
La Playa Beach Bar (a good place to swim and drink, music on Saturday)
Visit Casada Bay ruin which has a phenomenal view
Eat a Roti
Trip to Tobago Cays & Mayreau MUST climb the hill to see the view from the top and little church
Lazy Turtle Pizzeria
Steel Band in Tyrrell Bay I believe on Friday night or Saturday night
This will be a memorable trip. I am from Grenada and as you can see i am passionate about all things Gda/Ccou. You may know that Grenada is a tri-island nation and include Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. You can visit PM from CCou and an easy trip from Windward.
Carriacou is honestly not to be missed and you break things up a bit. You MUST take a day trip to the Tobago Cays if it is the ONE big thing you do and minimize costs in other ways like renting a car or minimizing hotel costs.

I think we would probably dive on Carriacou for a week. It looks like Defer Diving has some nice packages with lodging at The Mermaid. I don’t know if we’d be bored after a few days, but if our topside time was spent on the excursions you mentioned, then I think that would be perfect.
The hard part is getting there from Texas. All flights to Grenada go through MIA on American. And that isn’t much of a problem “going” but coming back it’s an issue. It may be better to go through Barbados.
Can’t wait! Hopefully in a year or two we can do it.

Turks and Caicos was absolutely stunning, until you get off the beach. The proper term to use is “grinding poverty”. Every single native I spoke with wants out of there in the worst way.

That's the problem with the better islands. They build an infrastructure, make it nice and make us feel safe but the natives are priced out of the market and still live in poverty.
We go there and think "oh, we're spending our dollars here. It makes it better for the people who live here." In reality, we're just feeding the pockets of those that have and making it tougher for those that are native to the island.

Don't disagree with that at all. When you get in areas like Blue Hills or Five Cays it gets down right sketchy.
I haven't been to places like the Caymans, but the term “grinding poverty” could be used for virtually any Caribbean Island.

The Caymans don’t have as much poverty because they are small and have the financial industry. I also think being part of the UK has something to do with it.
Roatan is the poorest island I have ever been to. It is common for people to live in cardboard shacks with no windows, doors, electricity, and running water. It is hopelessly poor.
Trinidad and Tobago are surprisingly not too bad. Port of Spain is tough, but there are nice areas that middle class locals live in. I guess the oil and gas industry has raised their standard of living.
Bonaire isn’t too bad, but again, they have oil and gas, and the salt industry.
Belize has a robust agricultural industry.
I think many of the poorest islands only have tourism, which as posted above, doesn’t do much. The islands that have some sort of industry are much better off.

The Belize mainland is poor beyond belief. The average wage is $1.25 an hour. Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker have a much higher standard of living. Belize City is the biggest shithole I’ve ever been in.
I agree that the British islands seem to have an overall higher standard of living. St. Kitts, Nevis, the BVI, Turks and Caicos and Anguilla come to mind immediately.

Belize mainland is poor by US standards. But the interior isn’t terrible. There is work and they have a robust agricultural industry with the citrus orchards and juice plants, the banana farms, and the shrimp farms. They supply the EU nearly all of its orange juice.
Point is that there are much poorer nations in the Caribbean basin than Belize. And yes, Belize City is terrible.

I have never been to Cuba, but would love to go someday. I’ve heard that the Gardens of the Queen is exceptional for diving.
