Belize and Mahogany bay car rentals

Going on a cruise in a few weeks. How safe is it to rent your own car and explore on your own. I don’t like the prepackaged excursions

Take a flight or take the ferry and go to Ambergris caye. Rent a golf cart while there and explore that way

We enjoyed a day at a resort on West Bay's Tabyana Beach. The beach was beautiful and the snorkeling was a blast. But we got there on an excursion arranged by the cruise ship. You can probably go on your own but you have better access to the beach and facilities if you have some connections with one of the resorts.

They have guards with rifles in front of stores and banks on Roatan. Belize on your own is another bad idea. Some people never leave the port at either of those places.
