I will be in Asheville Saturday, December 11th and Sunday the 12th. We are doing the Biltmore Christmas thing that Sunday for a lot of the day. Wanted any recommendations for things to do that Saturday. We don’t mind driving a little to go see things. Any ideas are appreciated.

I’m not being a smart arse. Use the search function. Asheville subject comes up twice a month. Also, I’ve found if you go to google and search “asheville tiger droppings” you get more and older threads.

Grove Park Inn is big at Christmas. They encourage visitors and you can grab a beverage at the bar in the awesome lobby. It looks like a hotel you’d find out west. All stone and the two fire places are about 10’ tall with huge logs thrown in.

Is there a Warren Haynes Christmas jam this year? If so I would be doing that for sure.

Am I the only one that was completely underwhelmed by this place? Felt like Disney Land in the mountains. It's not a bad place, but I'd rather do a cabin in the actual mountains than have this sanitized version of it.

Asheville is good for it's breweries, if you're not into that, it's not a place I'd recommend. If you are, I'd start with Burial and then Sierra Nevada.

No, Asheville sucks, unless you're really into the dirty hippy thing. There's a bunch of places in Western Carolina that are much cooler.

Agreed. Felt like I was at a zoo, looking at all the misfit creatures conglomerated in central locations.

It’s changed so much. I grew up 45 minutes away and lived there for a few years. 25 years ago there was absolutely nothing to do and only a few local restaurants and shops. No one was on the streets unless it was their yearly festival. 15 years ago we went on a Brews Cruise which consisted of the only 5 breweries that existed back then. All are still open but never listed on these threads as go-tos.

It’s all transplants and transplant’s money. Last time I was in New Orleans some homeless hippie girl told me she was moving to Asheville. It’s also similar to Nashville as it’s a bachelor/bachelorette party hot spot.

That being said I go back about once a year for nostalgic reasons and to brewery hop but we enjoy Blowing Rock/Banner Elk/Boone area for our mountain trips.

I concur that Asheville was a let down to some extent. I’d spend a full day or two and stay onsite at Biltmore in the Village Hotel and take 2 or 3 tours of Biltmore. White water rafting. Be ready to struggle to park if its crowded in downtown Asheville. Good BBQ downtown.
