Apple Airtags

Has anyone used the Apple Airtags inside your luggage to keep track of where it is located? I am confused in reading about the airtags. I thought that you had to be within 800 feet of the airtag for your Bluetooth to track the bag? If this is correct, how would placing an airtag in your luggage help you track your bag if it is across the ocean?
We have three trips planned and all three go through either LHR or AMS. The luggage troubles those airports are having has caused me to think about the airtags.
Thanks for any advice or explanation

This recent TPG article may help. It needs to ping any Apple device. It doesn’t have to be yours.

You don't have to be close to it, anyone with an apple device has to be close to it.

Used Tiles for years. Put one in each one of our bags. I’ll have to do some more research as to whether or not AirTags are any different or better.

I use airtags hidden on pieces of heavy equipment to cheaply keep track of the locations of my equipment- they work awesome stowed away in little compartments and work good cruising down the interstate at 75 mph. I can only imagine that they would work exceptionally well on luggage

And this I think is a differentiator from Tile, which you have to pay up for to piggyback off other Tile users only.
That's a more limited network than Apple phone users.

Airtag vs Tile
We've used Tile for years. Probably because it came out first and I had Android phones back then.
Been very happy. But think I'll do some more research. After all, if our man on the ground Teddy Ruxpin uses them, they must be good!

I actually use both, but when it came to the luggage it seemed like Airtag was the way to go. I don't use an iPhone so that's linked to my wife's phone.
I have some regular Tiles and one card tile in my wallet. Usually to find stuff in my own house

I use my Tile to find my keys or phone all the time!
Seriously, when it came to luggage, why? More accurate? Or?

Cost and network. iPhone is pretty ubiquitous in the US. The remote locating of a Tile that you're not near relies on someone else who is also a Tile user being near that Tile.
Airtags only need another iPhone user to be near the Airtag. That network has to be multiple times larger.
So in a situation where I'm now 10 miles from an airport or worse, what are the odds an airport employee is a Tile user vs being an iPhone user that's near my lost item for it to ping? That seems like it favors Airtag to me.
The gravy is for Airtag you don't pay extra for that feature. Tile is $30 a year for it.

I use them in all my checked bags now. Originally only bought to use in my rifle case when travel hunting. They work great and will always show me whats going on.

Not sure how the air tags would be very helpful.

For those of you that use these to track your luggage, do you have faith that you’ll be able to get an airline to retrieve your bag if you tell them where it’s located? Wasn’t there a thread on here a while back where someone left an iPad on a plan, tracked it, and then couldn’t get anyone at the airline to retrieve it for him?

An airtag is $25 or less on sale. It's better than throwing your hands up and doing nothing.
