Flying into Boston late September for a Sox game and Saints/Pats. Originally planned to stay in the city but decided to rent a car and take a day trip to Salem this time around. Found some good deals on a couple hotels in the Waltham/Watertown area. Doesn’t seem too far from anything. Don’t plan to do much in Boston other than the Red Sox game so I think the rental car route is my best option. I’m thinking it’ll be much better driving to Gillette stadium as opposed to having to wait around on and take the train. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Only problem is you’re on the wrong side of the city to get to foxboro. Watertown is residential so not much going on around you, Waltham you’re not going to find much either.

But if you’re just looking for a place to stay and plan on driving, it’ll work.

Also, not to be a Debbie Downer, but set low expectations for Salem.

Appreciate the info. Not really expecting to be blown away by Salem but would like to give it a look. I dig all that Halloween stuff so I’ll prob enjoy it for a day. It’s a pain to drive from Waltham to Fox borough? Was only showing to be 30 mins or so on my maps.

Average traffic? 30-40 minutes. Patriots game day? 2ish hours.

Literally nothing. They have an outdoor shopping center with some restaurants around Gillette. And a movie theater. Other than that there’s absolutely nothing in Foxboro.

Kinda what I was thinking. Do you have any other suggestions for an hourish-1:30 or so drive from Waltham that would be better than Salem? Trees should be turning when we go I think and I love a good scenic drive.

Have you ever been to Boston? If not, I would suggest staying Downtown or North End and enjoy every this that is there. Amazing amounts of history, restaurants, shopping and museums etc.

It might be the best walking city I've ever been to besides NOLA and the Freedom Trail just lines it all up for you. I would think the weather that time of year is ideal for walking as well.

Just my two cents

PS - Salem is rather underwhelming but we are glad we took the train there for half a day

I’d recommend going to bleacher bar before the Sox game. It’s a bar in the outfield of Fenway. I always bring friends there when they come up for a game and they always enjoy it

Appreciate the recs. We went to Boston for Pats/Chiefs game in 2019 and stayed in the backbay/copley square area at copley square hotel. It was a great time and we did a lot in the few days we were there. While I certainly wouldn’t mind doing it again I just figured I’d change it up a bit this time. Boston is a great city. Glad it won’t be so cold this time around . Last time it was in late December and we froze our asses off at the pats game.
