brazos bend is close. Never camped there but have been to the park a few times. Tons on alligators on some of the trails.
Livingston State Park is about 1.5 hours away. I've camped there. Plenty of room to ride bikes or hike.

Goliad state park is a nice place to camp. The park is on the river and you have the mission and fort to checkout

Never camped there, but Brazos Bend is a really cool park that's near Houston.
Sam Houston National Forest is another place to try and Lake Somerville is popular as well.
