Any experience skiing Lake Tahoe resorts?

I have family going to Heavenly for Mardi Gras, and I'm considering looking into taking my family too. Does anyone have any experience to share regarding Heavenly or other mountains in the Lake Tahoe area? I'm much more accustomed to the Colorado and Salt Lake resorts. I've never skied California and I'm a bit skeptical. Is it warranted?

Heavenly is a good mountain but I haven’t stayed there before. I have stayed at squaw and Incline village. The snow is definitely different from Salt Lake but there is no major difference. I have always liked Mt. Rose. No reason to be skeptical and the lake is awesome.

There are a good bit of resorts at Lake Tahoe, maybe 10 or so. The big ones are heavenly, squaw valley, and northstar. Honestly they are pretty solid mountains. The downside is that the winter seasons vary wildly. Sometimes it won’t snow for weeks and sometimes it snows like 4 feet in one day. So it is a little riskier than Colorado. Squaw Valley is probably the best all around mountain:
If you stay in South Lake Tahoe you can go to the casinos too. It’s a pretty fun place.

I only skied once on Mt. Rose and absolutely hated it. It was during Christmas-New Years. The wind blew away what little powder there was and it was like skiing on concrete. I'd never go back.

Sounds like conditions were bad. You can’t really judge a resort accurately when you go that early in the season

Every time I have been to Mt. Rose it has been snowing pretty good. Tahoe doesn't seem to have many middle of the road weather days either amazing weather or a shitshow.

I love Tahoe. Heavenly is great, just stick to the Nevada side. The backside of Kirkwood is great. Northstar has the most Vail-like village of the area. Diamond Peak is a small place good for a day with decent ticket prices.
Tahoe is very easy to get to. You will know by the end of December if the conditions are worth making the trip.

I can most certainly judge it in comparison to other places I've skied at the same time of year...Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper, Park City. If I happen to be at Lake Tahoe or Reno over the holidays, and I wanted to ski one day, I might try another location. Not Mt. Rose.
If the OP is, as he said, accustomed to the Colorado and Utah resorts as I am, he may be disappointed if he expects similar.

I went to heavenly last February. Having been to Colorado 20+ times, I would not recommend it. Besides the setting (it was beautiful) and the people I was with, the trip was pretty miserable.
Most crowded mountain I have ever been on, most lifts were 30-45 minute wait times.
They also shut half the mountain down with high winds
The employees didn’t really act like they gave a shite, everything was so disorganized. Not sure if that would have made the crowds easier to deal with or not.
If you stay on the state line part, the gondola is the only way up/down the mountain. 1 hour wait each way. And high winds shut it down.
It was pretty much the opposite of a well-run Colorado mountain.

A one day trip the only choices would be Squaw or Heavenly. The weather conditions are just different in Tahoe there can be very little snow on the ground and then 3 days later there they have gotten 5 feet. The major resorts are the same as Colorado, the smaller mountains Mt. Rose, Diamond Peak, Kirkwood are where you would see any real difference.

I have always enjoyed skiing Mt Rose. Squaw and Northstar are also very nice. Lots of nightlife on the south shore. The got lots of snow last year for Mardi Gras!

Homewood is a good place on the west side of the lake. Nice snow, little ice, less people.
