Renting a car to Fairbanks and Chena Hot Springs is your best bet for the lights, but double check the forecast or you might be wasting your time.
Talkeetna is super tight in the winter (and summer too) and you might get to see some lights but not if it’s gonna dump.
Girdwood is an awesome place, and open for the most part. They have a great brewery and some good restaurants. Look up The Double Musky, dude who runs it is from the Lafayette area if I’m not mistaken. They also have some pretty cheap snow machine tours and you can rip it up and check out glaciers and the mountains.
If you are just gonna rent a car then head down to Seward, very beautiful country heading thru Moose Pass and the Kenai Lake.
Dunno what your experience with winter roads is, but if you’re feeling comfortable with it, then make the drive down to Homer. It’s the like the Keys of Alaska. Where I’m at currently and it’s worth the time. Been getting great late night aurora the past few weeks actually.
Hope you have a great time, it’s the coldest part of the year so make sure to layer up. Cheers!

staying in the Marriott downtown like I did.
I definitely wouldn't stay downtown if I didn't have to. I used to stay at the Sheraton when on business but stayed at the Westmark last time and the crime in that area is ridiculous.

I am just suggesting downtown because of the Fur Rondy (if they are actually having events this year). Makes it a lot easier.

Fur Rendezvous starts February 26. If you’re there when it starts there will be some winter carnival activities in and around Anchorage including the start of the Iditarod race the first week of March. I don’t know if COVID has impacted the race this year.
I went to Anchorage a few years ago for both of those events. Also I drove to Wasilla and stayed there a couple of nights to see the Northern Lights. Beautiful sight.
I wouldn’t recommend driving to Fairbanks in February. If you do be sure to let your next of kin know.

Aleyska Resort is where I would stay. Taking the shuttle up the mountain and eating at the restaurant overlooking everything...fantastic...food was great but expensive.

Yep, if Fur Rondy is going on, then stay downtown. It would be entertaining for sure.

Just a couple photos from the snow sculpture contest at Fur Rondy 2019. I have made it to town for the last 3 Fur Rondy's, but I am going to miss this one. It's probably my favorite thing in Anchorage.

I haven't been in 20 years but it used to be a hell of a lot of fun.
