Saw the northern lights up around Prudhoe Bay last year. Was pretty epic. I doubt you see shite in Anchorage

And yeah, I’ll be sad if I don’t get to see the Lights, but really ever since 10th Grade I’ve always wanted to go to Alaska. Worst case I’ll be happy having visited. Right after Rome on places I want to visit that I haven’t.

Also. That flight from Seattle to Anchorage makes you think you’re going to die if it’s your last leg. Takes forever.

The flight attendants on the redeye from Anchortown to Seattle are not chosen for their attractiveness or warm personality, I can tell you that.

OP, spend as little time in Anchorage as humanly possible. You don't have to go too far outside the city limits to see some cool shite. They're hurting for tourism right now so you'll get some great deals.

I've been to Anchorage. I was expecting it to be a bit more exciting than it was. Whoever said its like Reno nailed it. Think Reno Nevada but more north and more cold.

King Crab is overrated. It's good, but it is expensive and doesn't fill you up at all, you'll be hungry 2 hours after eating it. Find yourself some good Halibut Fish & Chips instead. Humpy's is good.

I bet it would be better in the summer. Like you I went in the winter and it was dark most of the time.

It's nice to say I went to Alaska just to say I went. If I could do it again I would stay in a cabin somewhere and live the Alaskan lodge life with a wood fire instead of staying in the Marriott downtown like I did.

Hit the slopes in Girdwood at Alyeska Resort. The drive is about 40 miles SE of the city, but the views are incredible as you drive down the Turnagain Arm (waterway).

Restaurant suggestions - Lucky Wishbone (fried chicken spot), 49th State Brewing (king crab), Glacier Brewhouse (king crab), F Street Station (dive bar with good food), Simon and Seaforts (upper scale, but worth it).

Yeah I think this would be a better trip. Northern lights are amazing but weather is looking snowy across the State this week.

Yep, it’s kind of a shithole. Spent a few years up there. Saw the lights a bunch.

Chena Hot Springs. Its a spa in the wilderness set up for Aurora viewing, NE of Fairbanks.

Closer to Anchorage, Hatcher Pass. Look up Aurora Forecasts. LINK

Its been 5 years since I went to Anchorage for a conference... but from what I remember from being there for 3 days...

Moose's Tooth - Great local pizza place and bar.
Glacier Brewhouse - Excellent brewery, try their fresh grilled salmon if you go here, a bit pricy, but well worth it
Tommy's Burger Stop - Good burger place

Try any of the local street vendors there - their gyros are legit.

In terms of getting around, if you don't mind the exercise, seriously rent a bike for the day and go exploring. I actually did this for a few days up there, its one of the easiest ways to get around in Anchorage. (On 2nd thought - its February in Alaska don't do this )

I also went to Anchorage Museum, and a few of the local parks there.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to look around more as the trip was mostly for work.

How much time do you have? Furrondy should be going on but I don’t know what is scheduled this year with COVID Furrondy. Fur auction, dog races, ice sculptures, 5k, outhouse race, etc. if they are having events try to stay downtown. There is a Sheraton, Hilton or the historic anchorage hotel. F Street Station is a small bar worth visiting. 49th street brewery or Glacier Brewery are also great.

Most of the locals take mask wearing serious. I’d spend time in Girdwood, drive to Homer. The train has a different winter schedule, but give it a try. Get the Aurora app. I think it’s a full moon next weekend so probably not the best timing for the northern lights.
