Directed towards our Alaskan board members, where would you go for a quick weekend? I found roundtrip flights from Seattle to Fairbanks for $118 in August, Ketchikan or Sitka for $175, and Juneau for $180 over Labor day weekend. If I do labor day, it'd be Friday night to Monday otherwise more than likely Friday night to Sunday afternoon. Nice getaway from here sounds nice I just don't know what I could see up there in that time slot. Likely just me for the trip. Thanks

Juneau is awesome. The weather might be iffy at that time of year though. September and October are the rainy seasons, but a nice day that time of year is incredible.

Sitka would be my choice, but I am just a huge fan of that place. Its one of the most beautiful natural settings imaginable, but the weather is rougher there than Juneau.

Weather would be better in Fairbanks most likely, but not a lot to do there without traveling outside the city.

Sitka is my quick weekend getaway, but its only 100 miles South of here. Has some decent restaurants, lots of outdoor stuff, hike Harbor mountain from downtown.

Sitka

Juneau is more spread out. More actual road, though it dead ends 40 miles north of Downtown. Glaciers, trails, wildlife. You could easily spend a weekend and not leave downtown though.

Appreciate the input Roger. Looked up rental cars in sitka, $125/day. Doable but not ideal. How is public transportation in the area? Don't mind bus, taxi, etc.

If I stay in Juneau you coming out to meet at a bar or a nice hike? . Deltas flights to JNU get in at 11pm and leave at 5am, Sitka has better flight times

Eta: looks like there's more tours out of Juneau than Sitka such as the Mendenhall Glacier tour. It has good reviews, wondering if that's worth the $$

Sitka, public transport is kinda iffy and doesn't extend to the outer reaches.

Its stellar in Juneau, regular bus schedule and the bus can get you within a mile and a quarter from the Mendenhall Glacier visitors area. A nice little hike to the waterfall is perfect. It doesn't go "out the road" but covers most of the populated area. The Mendenhall Valley is only about 8 miles from Downtown.

I'll be gone that weekend (Hopefully, going to LA for the game) but if that falls through will be glad to run you out there, if you come this way.

Bears will be thick at that time, mainly black bears.

Yeah, plan to fly out on the third on Delta. I actually prefer them to Alaska right now.

I'll be making a decision by this afternoon on Juneau or Sitka. I think I'll end up doing a tour or 2 for one of the days. Fishing would be fun as would hiking/glaciers. Specific recommendations out of Juneau or Sitka?

Yeah I'm a bigger fan of delta than the politically correct Alaska airlines

You don't need a tour for that. Save your $$ and just take a cab. Walk all around. It really is gorgeous. I think there is also a bus that goes there.

Bus drops off about a mile and a quarter from the visitors center. Its an easy walk.

There are private shuttles to the Glacier as well.

The Forest Service has numerous trails around the glacier, bears will be pretty active during August. Sockeye will be in the streams in a couple of weeks, hopefully.

Yeah, this is a new thing for them. Relatively.

Company has changed dramatically over the years. I'll fly Delta out of JNU any time I can. We desperately need more competition.

Nah.

Do it on your own or if I am in town and you come here, I can show you around.

There are three places you can access the park. One of the positives about this summer is tourism is back, but it will not be packed like it ususally is.

This thread got me thinking....

Do we have official experts on here who have lived/worked within industries and locations?

Roger = Alaska
VA Buckeye = St. John and Caribbean
CuseTiger = flight guru

Anyone else?

I also live in Alaska and can provide tips (along with Roger), so does TimeOutDoors. We all live in different parts of the State, so I think we have all the areas covered minus Fairbanks area.

ETA: Sitka is the location I would choose if I were going on this trip. However, Fairbanks in the Fall (although rainy), has some pretty gorgeous colors going on.

I can't believe I left him out of that question... he has provided the most info about a city than anyone else.

Are the northern lights a pretty awesome sight to see or is it overrated? I’ve read that Fairbanks is one of the best places to see them and I’ve considered making the trip. Thoughts ?

Sorry for the hijack Cuse.

Never overrated. I have been in Alaska for a couple of decades and still act like a little boy at Christmas when they come out.

A great place to see them would be Chena Hot Springs NE of Fairbanks. Fall and Winter are excellent times to go. In winter, they have an ice bar, dog mushing, snow machining, etc. The main hot spring pool is huge and its a primo place to watch the Aurora.
