Considering a trip up to Acadia via Boston and Portland. Planning to fly up to Boston, then take the train to Portland for a day or so, then drive a rental up to Acadia to spend about a day and a half before retracing steps. For those who have been, would that be a little late in the season to head out there? Does that sound like enough time to make it worthwhile? Any preferred place to stay around the park?

I’ve been there about Oct 10th. Weather can be iffy but I caught it in a good year. The good news is the crowd has left but the bad news is you’ve missed the fall colors. Personally I’d aim for somewhere a little more south.

I have been there once. Bar Harbor was a port on a cruise I was on. It was the last Sunday in September of 2016. I remember that because I was standing on top of Cadillac Mountain when the news broke that Les Miles was fired. We were hoping to see the fall foliage but the leaves were just barely starting to turn colors. You have to time it just right. We were there a little too early. A couple of weeks later would have been perfect. Even at that time it was pretty cold, especially on the mountain. I can't recommend a hotel since we were on a cruise but there are a number of nice hotels in Bar Harbor. I do recommend going to the park if you have the chance. It is a beautiful place.

Bar Harbor Inn is real nice but pricey. I was surprised that lobster was so pricey in Bar Harbor. You'd think that with the abundance, it would have been cheaper. Spent one day in Acadia.

I'm not sure about the time of year question since we were there in early June, before the big crowds but still good weather. We stayed at the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel. It was decent and right on the water which was great. Acadia is a blast, we did quite a bit of hiking. We spent a day and a half doing Acadia, I would have enjoyed a couple more. Another suggestion I would have is on the drive from Portland to Bar Harbor take Highway 1. It's more along the coast and you go through a lot of cool towns. It's not the quickest way to get there, but definitely a cool drive. On the way back you can take the interstate.

Also, eat breakfast at 2Cats in Bar Harbor. It was very good.
