I want to go for most of December and January.

I've done 6+ months backpacking in Europe. Never been to Southeast Asia.

Flights are not as simple there as Europe. What's the best/cheapest place to fly into?

I have tons of research to do, and while overwhelming, I am fricking ecstatic for this trip.

Looking to do Thailand, Malayasia, and maybe Cambodia. I have a good friend currently in Koh Tao (spelling?).

I've seen $5/$600 fares to Bangkok frequently so I would start there.

The Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea have opposite "in" seasons.

Here is my rough suggestion....I have done a 30 day trip and worked extensively in every country minus Laos and Mynamar

I would start in the Philippines and work your way West or reverse.

Philippines - 1 day Manila then get out to the Islands. Depends on what you really like, so need more information (a week there) (I love Bohol and Boracay (even though it has got a little touristy)

Fly to Hong Kong (2 days, expensive but worth it)

Fly to Borneo - do 5-7 days there depending on what you like

From there go to Bali, which I think is ok, but since you are so close, it is bucket list checkpoint.

Then spend 5-7 days in Vietnam, you have to do Saigon and Hanoi areas. Do the Vietnam War tours, and enjoy some great nature, especially up North)

Three days in Cambodia from the Angkor Wat to the Killing fields (many flights from Vietnam) Dirt Cheap compared to other countries.

Then over to Kuala Lumpur for two days as it a great city with the Petronas Towers. (Some people really love Penang area of Malaysia if you want to stay in country)

Then down to Singapore for 2 days (very expensive), then to Thailand where I would spend the rest of your time. Go up North to Chaing Mai, down to Ko Samui, etc...

Chances are you will end making friends with some Aussies and going everywhere with them.

If you consider China Southeast, I would avoid just because of the Visa hassle and you could spend a whole month there alone.

I like Jakarta and Indonesia, but traffic sucks and you really need to know how to get around there or it will not be worth your time.

As for flights in, the three most common choices are Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong, but since you are flying all the way over and are going to be jetlagged to hell, you might as well go to either the Philippines or Vietnam.

Damn that sounds like an awesome suggestion. What are your thoughts on Bali? I've always wanted to explore the island in depth.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Won't do any of China on this trip.

I'm swamped with info but trying my best to sort through it all.

I'm going for the beautiful scenery, to scuba dive in Koh Tao, to meet people, and to party my arse off.

Maybe it was the time I was there, but I felt I was in Australia with the number of Aussies everywhere.

Do you like beaches or more of a jungle experience? Bali has both, plus Java close by.

I felt I got a lot more true experience in Thailand or the Philippines for the money. Plus I like the Thai food much better than indonesian.

I am sure people on here can point your better but when I compare the places, I thought Thai and the Philippines were more beautiful and not as crowded (minus Bangkok or Manila) as Bali.

Not sure how old you are but Cambodian beaches and Vietnamese beaches are real hot spots right now that the young folks are flocking.

Flying from LAX into Tapaei, Taiwan was fairly easy and from there you can hop down to the Philippines and go from there.
Ive seen those flights for around $900 or so.

I back packed for 4 months through se Asia, here are my suggestions for scenery, scuba diving, and partying. For a 50 day trip I would make sure to hit Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

Scuba diving- the best diving is probably in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. I think the best dive spot in Malaysia might be dangerous now bc of pirates though.

Scenery- beaches/islands in southern Thailand, mountains in northern Thailand, halong bay Vietnam, hoi an Vietnam, temples in siem reap Cambodia, Bali Indonesia, islands in the Philippines. Pretty much everywhere you go outside the big cities will have good scenery

Partying- full moon party koh phagnan, koh samui, koh phi phi, Bangkok, Hanoi, nha trang, Ho Chi Minh, sinoukville(surprised I didn't die here), Bali, vang vieng. Make sure to check out koh rong for a few days while you're in Cambodia, it's an island just off sinoukville.

If you hve any questions let me know, I'll check back in on this thread in a few days.
