Any suggestions for scenic drives, parks, lodging, etc. for parts of Utah south of SLC to the Arizona border? Maybe parks just as good as the popular ones but less crowded? Thanks!

Bryce and capital reef are both amazing and far less crowded than Zion/arches/canyonlands. And the road between Bryce and CR (Utah 12) is by far the most beautiful drive we’ve ever taken. If you have time take the detour to hells backbone bridge

At Bryce, drive all the way to the end and then do all the turnouts on the left. At the amphitheater, park and hike down and walk thru the hoodoos. At CR if you have 4WD you can go see shite that will make you think you are the only person on earth. Fruita is a must stop as well

NE of CR is goblin valley state park, also a must stop

Driving the scenic byway 12 is a must. I learned about it here and it’s absolutely amazing.

I did CR, Bryce, and Zion in mid May and it wasn’t that busy. Was I lucky or is that typical? Idk

I had the exact same experience. I learned about it here. Made the drive shortly thereafter and it matched/exceeded expectations. Strongly agree with the others' recommendations.

The key to TRULY appreciating this drive is allowing yourself to enjoy the changes in elevation. Stop, walk in the Escalante River and absorb that red rock environment. Past Boulder, stop in the mountains and spend time in the Aspens and wildflowers (may is still early though). As you drop into Capital Reef, really appreciate that change
