3 Night Stay Recommendation - Flying into Cancun

Flying into CUN late July. Initially planned to stay in Isla Mujeres, but debating whether it would make more sense to stay mainland due to short nature of trip.
Few questions:
1. For those familiar with making the trek to Isla, does it make sense logistically to try and spend the extra travel time for a long weekend? We get in at 11:30 AM on a Thursday and leave 5 PM on Sunday.
2. If Isla is doesn't make sense logistically, any recommendations on staying somewhere in the Cancun or Playa area? We aren't all-inclusive fans for the most part, but we'd entertain both ideas given the right price/location etc.
a. All inclusive option that is more boutique style than for the masses.
or
b. Non-inclusive option that is in a good location with nice beach and can take transportation relatively easy to get to nice restaurants. Thinking probably in a "mid-range" budget. ~$400 or less.
Thanks!

Cancun or Playa area?
You do know that Playa means "Beach" in Spanish, right?

Isla is more laid back and is my favorite place in Mexico.
Cancun you can get some great deals on hotels and AIs.
Look up Sandos is pretty cheap and is located in a walkable part of cancun.
You can get to Isla quickly if you hire a car service.
Carm is $100 both ways including ferry tickets $69 without. A cab will cost $80 each way.
I would get the carm car service. A ferry leaves every 30 minutes and the ride is 20 minutes. .
The longest part is the ride from the airport to the terminal.
Still I usually take the 12pm direct to Cancun from New Orleans and am walking around Isla Mujeres by 4 4:30.
I went there 5 times in last year..

Sure - but if it's raining or there's a delay you can easily tack on some time to a trip. Not that big of a deal, but when I have a small window like this I try to keep things simple as possible. Sounds like most don't think it's a big deal which is good to hear.
