Serious question on a 3 month trip - how do you create some sense of normalcy? It’s impossible to be in vacation mode that long and not get burnt out.

If you are on vacation I think it’s a good problem to have.

But that’s why I suggested staying somewhere for a month. Go go going and moving places every 3-7 days does get old. It’s nice to kick back and just take it super easy.

But to be fair to OP he is spending extended time in some lesser locations so he can probably take 2-3 days a week and not do a whole lot

Levanto is my favorite place ever. I’d climb on a plane to go back there tonight. We stayed in Hotel Nazionale. It was very nice.

How active are you? How busy do you stay? Are you fit enough to easily carry your suitcases constantly all over like you are planning?

We're 8.5 months traveling in Europe so far and have been to quite a lot of countries already. Later this month we head to the Christmas markets in Germany, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Austria. We're active

Are you planning on renting a car at all?

Yes, when needed. We prefer trains. Flying where it's mostly needed or just so much more efficient/cheaper. Flying to Rome, Palermo, Malta and then to Naples isn't too bad considering 3 months of travel. Will do local busses and Bolt as well. We use all means of transportation.

But I also like to stay relatively active and not just sit around a small town all day

We're absolutely going to do nothing some days immersed in local culture and hanging out, hitting the markets and going back to the apartment to cook. Will likely take some cooking classes too.

Only suggestion is less time in Positano and more time in Sorrento.

Thanks, yeah the more I read the more we'll visit Posi vs staying in it. Since we come into Naples from Malta, the plan is to go stay in Sorrento for a week or so, go check out Pompeii, etc. Then thinking another week or so in Salerno. Still working all this out, but that's looking more likely for Amalfi portion.

parking in most cities is a pain in the arse,

Yep, we definitely understand that! We'll get an Airbnb with a parking spot when we know we're going to rent a car.

Walk of the Gods if you are active.

We are and thanks for the suggestion. We were just in Santorini and walked from Fira to Oia. Beautiful hike.

A couple of places I'd strongly recommend based on our trips are Orvieto and San Gimignano.

we were definitely looking into San Gimi and will look more into Orvieto. Maybe if we can go on the way to Siena.

Remember that you can only be in the Schengen zone 90 out of any 180 days. The time that you spend later this month will count against you next year.

We drove from Rome to Florence this summer, spending two nights each in Orvieto and Siena. The Val d'Orcia is beautiful, and driving is definitely the way to go in this part of Italy. It's easy to stop in little towns for a gelato while soaking up the atmosphere. That's what we did for San Gimi: just spent a few hours there. Same for Pienza.

That's a little tricky and I say that even though we've been traveling over 8 months in Europe. You still feel like you're on vacation mode even if you stay somewhere for 30 days like we did in Barcelona but there was some semblance of "living there" as we had our same stores/restaurants we'd go to and people we met, etc. But you don't HAVE to do something every day if you're in a place long enough, which is what we have done in a few places. Not all.

Great to hear. I gotta say, the Airbnb choices so far have been meh. I'll keep looking! We may have to do a hotel but when you're traveling for a while a kitchen and washing machine are ideal.

yeah I'm looking at trains and not the greatest of paths from Naples/Salerno to Siena or Orvieto. You'll either go to Florence or Rome first. Driving to Siena is like 4-7.5 hours tho! But we'll definitely get a car for some of exactly that, soaking it up in the countryside and going at our own pace.

ETA: the time now shows as about 4.5 hours, so when I checked there must have been an accident/construction.

I was thinking about adding in Sienna to the discussion, but certainly, it's all part of the "Tuscany Experience"! Definitely I'd look into that one too.

Liking those countryside photos, brother. That's the relaxing atmosphere we plan on having for a good part of this trip.

There's a lot of different ways to do things, but if your wife is EU resident and you are spending that much time there it seems wild to me that you don't just buy or rent a car long term.

There's so much to see in the small towns and country or otherwise places that public transport is a lot more of a PITA.

Assuming you guys have a hell of a budget though.

You know, I’ve been reading all these posts and thinking about the objective of going somewhere for an extended period of time. I scrap everything I’ve said and suggest you just go spend it in Slovenia. You'd thank me later!

I'm biased for my own family ties, but you could go from Catania to Caltagirone (cool little city, walk the steps), then head south to Marina Di Ragusa and come back up the east coast of the Island to Catania. Syracuse is great. I really enjoyed it.

There's an awesome little sandwich shop and deli on the lower level of this building - LINK Ge some sandwiches and olives then you can go walk the street markets.
