I appreciate the info. We ended up pulling the trigger on a place in Vail Village called All Seasons (through vrbo) for first week of Feb next year. 4 nights @ 300/night so not too bad. It's near Golden Peak side of village (the quiet side I hear) and is a really short walk to the Riva Bahn express lift . Not sure why Mrs jkyle was so hung up on going to Vail. The ski map looks solid though. I second the idea of stocking up on groceries and eating in mostly. We went to vail on Thursday to just look around and it def struck me as a pretty high end kinda snooty situation. Lol.
You will love staying in the village. When I went to Vail my very first time in 2006 we actually stayed at the Vail Cascades(now known as the Grand Hyatt) on the Western edge of the ski slope, it was a ski in/ski out hotel. It was awesome, but since I wasn't paying for it I didn't mind how much it cost.
Vail is my favorite mountain, I was there for 4 days last month and still didn't get to everything, and I am a first chair to last chair skiier who doesn't take breaks.
Here are my favorite runs:
Intermediate(Blue): Born Free, Simba, Northwoods, Poppyfields, Grand Review, The Slot
Advanced(Easier Blacks): Riva Ridge, Northstar, Hornsilver
Expert(Harder Blacks): Lover's Leap, Roger's Run, Blue Ox, Genghis Khan, Campbell's, Ricky's Ridge, Forever, WOW, Bwana
If You Like Bumps: Wildcard in the Game Creek Bowl is a great place to practice bumps, I think its a better place to practice than Whistle Pig, even though Whistle Pig is a blue and Wildcard is a black - the bumps on Whistle Pig are massive compared to Wildcard. Highline and Prima are the two signature bump runs of the resort, I did the PPL(Prima, Pronto and Log Chute) all in a row and its pretty tough. Highline is a little less step than Prima, but its longer and the bumps are bigger.
I got lucky in my last trip, Roger's Run, which is never groomed, was groomed when I was there and it was awesome. I also got the privilege of skiing there on a powder day, I don't think it gets much better than Lover's Leap all the way down to Chair 39 in Blue Sky Basin in knee deep powder. They almost always groom a black run in the back bowls every day, find which one it is and ski it, those bowls are great in powder but also the black runs back there when groomed are great too. They had Ricky's Ridge, Genghis Khan, and Jade's Glade groomed for my trip on various days.

Better conditions today at Big Sky for my last day of the ski season. Felt like I had the place to myself at times, only lines to be seen were at the tram.

I stayed there this year, got a huge discount because of Hyatt's health care promotion. It was awesome, I mean the place had basically its own chair lift but I did feel out of place. Vail is by far and away the most high end place I have skied.
Vail does have great groomed terrian. CO had horrible snow when I was there but most of Vail was open because of their great grooming.

OpenSnow is predicting 24” at Breck over the next 5 days...the Northern Co and front range ski areas are about to get hammered.

Looking towards 21-22. Thinking about going to Snowmass. Any recommendations on lodging?

It’s that time of year again. Epic and Ikon are advertising “best prices” for passes. For two adults and two kids, Ikon Base is about $100 more than Epic Local (Ikon is about $100 cheaper with renewal discount) so there’s not much price difference.
An interesting option is the Keystone pass for $311 ($215 for kids) which includes 5 days at Crested Butte. That’s a damn good option for $1k for a family of 4.
I think I’m going to do Ikon Base+ and the Keystone Pass. That way I get WP and Keystone for the day trips, swap Aspen for Vail for the fancy weekends, and options like CB, Big Sky, Taos, Deer Valley for longer trips.

Definitely rolling with Ikon this year despite the price gap. I’ve wanted to check out Schweitzer and they were added to Ikon. I am also hopeful to move back to Colorado from Washington next winter and would rather be on Ikon than Epic in CO. Jumping off 70 at empire for WP is clutch.

“Good luck with the tunnel, mf’ers!!” No red plates get off in Empire either.

I am either going to get the full Ikon or the base Ikon plus the Indy pass. I get the healthcare discount so the base is just $549 and the full is $719.
Probably leaning towards the full Ikon since it gives me seven days at Big Sky and I could also go to Jackson Hole. But I will wait and see what resorts Indy adds on 4/27 first.
I don't have a lot of interest in Epic, Big Sky is kind of the gamechanger with Ikon since I know I will be going there.

Big Sky has now entered another dimension. 21/22 season will require an additional pass for the tram.
Here we go.

Up to $80 additional per day to ride the tram. Wowzers. Honestly, an extra $200 added to the cost of the trip won’t stop people from going, paying, and waiting in just as long line as before.

Yeah, I saw that and it does suck but I rarely ride the tram anyway because of the wait times. Not sure this going to change things much in regard to that issue, still have a very limited capacity for that terrian.
They need to build a bigger tram or maybe put a lift up liberty bowl. Also limit sightseers to only riding up after 3 pm.
