Once you've turned your surround system into a single volume up/down its impossible to go back down that road again.

You're going to pretend that hdmi soundbars don't disappear as a secondary device when the tv remote controls them?

When lightning killed my 10-year old Sony AVR this past spring, I opted for a much simpler system: all my sources (STB, Bluray, Roku) run directly into my TV, with a single optical output into a 5.1 AVR. Only thing anyone has to deal with is volume level.

I guess I was confused since the statement was in response to this quote. He uses one remote to control the STB, Blu-ray, Roku, and TV ?

I use one remote for my TV, Blu-Ray, AVR, X-Box, Fire TV Cube.

I can also give voice commands with Alex for much of it. My wife loves how simple it is to us.

Me too. I guess you can say they “disappear” since you don’t see any of them. I can also control lights and thermostat with the same remote if I like.

Ditto. I mostly use Alexa for the lights and thermostat these days though.

I switched to Google Home for the lights and background music in other rooms. I’m not against those devices at all but if I want good sound and want to sit and listen I use…

My main system is BlueOS which I love. Everything on one app on my phone.

I am completely satisfied with my music situation thanks to Chromecast audio and a simple speaker switch. I use a Google mini in the kitchen either by itself if I don't want to wake the house, or to play music from my receiver to whichever speakers I have activated. We use the kitchen/patio pair 99% of the time, so I almost never have to mess with the selector. The only improvement I could imagine for music, for my use, would be a Google controlled switch. Even then, I would rarely use it.

Anyway, I still not close to pulling the trigger. I keep switching between the simplicity of a better sound bar with a couple surrounds, and the multi speaker systems like the Sony or WiSA.

until AVRs stop looking like that, they'll never make any inroads into the mass market.

Purchases made. Glad to get this over. Because my SO is female and not very techy, I went with a sound bar, yet again. This time the Samsung HW-Q950A. The glowing reviews were just too much to ignore. The KLipsch Cinema 800 was close, but there were too many not so glowing reviews.

On the TV, while it would have been nice to pair the bar with a Samsung, I could not get past the Sony X90J 65".

I will wait to get a mount after I see what the current Panny is hung with. I may end up having to pay someone, but I would like to reuse whatever holes are already there.

Yeah, I'm really curious about Samsung's auto room calibration.

Controlling volume with a single remote even with an AVR has been around a while now. TV can change the AVR volume level by hdmi-cec or any other device built lately can do this.

I’ve used some version of a Logitech Harmony remote for over a decade to control the AVR volume plus all of my devices.

thats nice and all but after my 3rd onkyo in 10 years i was done with the AVR merry-go-round. maybe things have settled down now but i doubt it. this isn't like the 1900s where NTSC tvs remained unchanged for 75 years. too many constant changes and its just stupid you have to throw out a $1000+ device just to add dolbyvision or atmos and spend who knows how much time configuring and buying cables for a new one. who knows when dolbyvision2 or 16k or atmos 1.1 comes out or god help us, they change the "HDMI" spec entirely because God knows a standard HDMI cable looks like a dinosaur now compared to usb-c or lightning. hdmi is too easily hacked so you know the people who run hollywood are cooking up something new to make the experience of connecting our devices as miserable as possible.

thats fine for those who want to play that game but i have 2 AVRS and a box full logitech remotes i'll be happy to sell you.

AVRs were great back in the old days when we needed to integrate 100 CD changers, cassette tape players, dvd/blurary players, etc etc. but nobody needs all that garbage anymore.

i have 10,000+ albums in lossless FLAC format and 1,000s of REMUX movies in HD and 4K. those formats should be good to go for the foreseeable future and the only 'cloud' dependency is praying my server doesn't shite the bed.

all you need is ethernet and electricity.

<-- team WiSA/soundbar forever

Bless your little heart.

I think it’s funny you bash a widget in one post because of the dated technology you believe said widget has only to bash the same widget in another post because the technology keeps changing.

And what about your knighting for SONOS? Are you ignorant to the technology changes their users experience??? Nothing like your current $700 Amp and $750 sub not be compatible with your new $900 sound bar.

And I’m not saying one product category is better than the other, they both have there place. I’m just pointing out the nonsense you spew from your little bubble.
