i read that on here yesterday. was thinking about getting one (although I have and like apple tv and was planning on continuing to use it).

there are a ton of things like appletv and roku that you can add for cheap that perform much better than the "Smartness" of a tv. They are slow and cumbersome. You're much better off with an add on.

I kicked my Apple TV to the curb when I got my smart TV. It's much easier to use, but just like everything else all smart TVs aren't created the same.

The problem with the smart tvs is they don't update the apps. I have a 2010 model Samsung and am stuck with only Netflix, hulu, Pandora, and hbogo. While that isn't bad, there is much more content that I have to get some other way.

Nope, that's the problem with your 6 year old smart TV.

My smart tv has roku built in. That's the best of both worlds. You don't get a halfass smart tv and you dont have to have another set-top box on your counter/shelf/wherever.

Pretty much the only TV's that are not smart, are going to be entry level, bottom of the barrel.
The phrase should be, "dont buy it for the smart features, look at other features/specs"
Yes you should be buying a smart TV, but look at what else you are getting for comparison

hmmmm
I don't think it matters much
eventually they'll all be so-called smart tv's
it could end up being, more features open up option for more to go wrong
If you feel the need to get a regular one before they're all gone, then go for it...
best wishes

I use my XBone much less now that my television has all of the same "video watching apps" loaded onto it

If you're fine with a shitty designed and laggy UI go ahead. But think about it, who would/could make a better app platform: Apple, Google, and Microsoft; or LG, Samsung, Panasonic and Sharp?
There is a reason Eastern made software isn't any competition to Western made software

But what if those TV manufactures used those tech companies for the UI ?????
Mind blown!

Are there even any non-smart TVs that AREN'T crappy? I always wanted to focus on a good TV without the smart capabilities, but those TVs seem to lack in overall quality.

Thanks, bros. Yeah, to your point, I actually don't think I noticed an option of Smart Enabled vs. non-Smart, all other things being equal, last time I looked.
I hear the point, though. Might as well keep using Apple TV AND get a smart tv, just knowing that the smart part of the tv might not be that great.
Now somebody select me a 42ish inch tv. I don't require much, but it seems like definition/resolution
and refresh rate should be important. Honestly, I don't really care that much about definition to be totally honest. Sound might be more important.

Using the smart features on my two Panny's is a PITA.

It's current til the beginning of summer when it's replacement comes out so you might find a deal. It's a smart TV powered by android TV (Google), it's 4K so you are ready for all the content that's going to flood the market soon, and the speakers on it sound excellent.

So I should have to get a new TV every 3-4 years just to keep up with new apps?

Google Cast Vizio TV
Check this TV out that came out today. It has the Google Cast protocol built in which means it gives you the same functionality as a Chromecast but it is built into your TV. It also comes with an Android tablet as your remote.

If you feel the need. Your comment above about smart TVs not being able to have new apps added is entirely not true.

Most smart tvs have slow arse processors and minimal specs for the system to barely function. Not all. But I have no idea which smart tv works best.
As everyone stated, ROKU FIRE or Apple all make devices that will run faster, upgrade software more often and have better overall features.
