I've never tried Apple car play, but Android Auto is worth changing a head unit for. I was very skeptical before I bought my GM truck this year with an Android Auto compatible unit and I couldn't be happier. I am still waiting for Waze to be added, but it is great even without it.
Google maps has live traffic data from all of the Android phones around and will lead you to the path of least resistance towards your planned destination... I know you can use Google maps on your phone, but it works better on the head unit.
If you do change the head unit make sure it has Car Play & Android Auto capability and i think you will be happy you did.

I really dont care as i have no idea of any of the details of his wife's business but are you under the impression that you can't run a business on android with those limited items you listed(if you switched an iphone for a android phone and an ipad Mini for an android tablet)?
